I think we are in an exciting time to have blockchain domains where people can finally protect and share whatever content they choose without being censored. I think this is a super important use case seeing that companies are choosing what they want us to see and what they think isn't 'appropriate'

The other pretty cool thing is the same domain can be used as your crypto wallet address

What I understand, it is an ICO who are planning to sell domain names under .zil extension. While the website says I can pre-book a domain name now, but whatever I am searching, is available at auction only.

Also what is alternate root domains? Can it be used in normal browsers or it requires a specialized TOR browser??

The main idea of this project is very attractive...imagine just using a simple domain instead of that complex wallet address with long stretch of letters and numbers. Here your domain is your wallet address so you can buy a domain name with your very name on it and whenever someone is asking for your wallet address just share the domain you registered in this site. Well, very useful indeed. Now, I wonder why the use of .zil then I read that it is because this is launched in the Zilliqa blockchain and a grantee of the Zilliqa Foundation to work with the extension. I am then wondering: Will it mean that my domain name is the same wallet address I can use for all cryptocurrencies and tokens...meaning the same for Bitcoin, Eth, and the rest of the gang?

I definitely think you're able to use crypto like BTC, ETH and LTC according to their website. I am not sure if the .zil will always be the same or if that will change over time as well.

That's actually really cool. I really like having one address for multiple coins. I feel like this is something that the general public will really take to more than a long string of characters and numbers

The problem with that would come in with the fact that you are trusting a intermediary service to access your coins. I think all these 3rd party services are over complicating things and people should not rely on them, not to be bad actors.

We also see what the Dutch government did to the Bestmixer.io domain, so what will happen if some government does the same with this service.  Roll Eyes

I don't think that will be happening because BTC requires it's own compatible wallet. Also every currency will then need to send the respective coins to it's compatible addresses.
For example : BTC can only be sent on addresses starting with "1" (P2PKH) , "3" (P2SH) and "bc1" (bech32)
So in order to create a single wallet for multiple currencies they will have to integrate all the wallets into one and then come up with an algorithm which will intelligently identify what type of currency is being sent and then map it to the respective address in the backend.
I don't think anybody has done such a thing yet henceforth making it next to impossible.

That's actually really cool. I really like having one address for multiple coins. I feel like this is something that the general public will really take to more than a long string of characters and numbers
Storing all coins at one place gives you a big disadvantage. If your wallet is compromised "All" of your coins will be lost.
Storing them at different places is a good option as the chances for  all of them getting hacked is too low.

There are already other projects doing that
Namecoin, that allows .bit domains, and even ethereum is soon going to have .eth domains(called ethereum name service https://ens.domains/)

Those domains will be registered in the blockchain without any central authority managing them.

I loved the whole thing except the fact that they only support Ethereum and Zilliqa as a first instance

I can kind of see why there would be value in maintaining domains that can't be taken down, however, it's already seriously rare to see a domain be shut down unless it's promoting extensively illicit content. It is becoming a bit more valuable to have independent domains, admittedly. Considering that there are efforts to try and remove certain viewpoints of persons from having platforms on the internet, maybe the .zil system will be a benefit for these explicit cases. I don't know if most people would be able to support a website's infrastructure, considering some of the server banks that would be required for regular operation, especially for material such as video streaming platforms.

I'm skeptical about the usefulness of the .zil domain system, but maybe there is some merit to it.

I definitely see the use case but I also am curious about the order of domains and what considers a domain a premium versus not. Is there a list for the auction?

I am also quite interested to see how they plan to handle websites that are going to have content that might be considered 'illegal' in countries. The one wallet aspect is pretty clutch though

It is good idea. However, it is wrong to think there will never be censorship. I believe regulation will happen within decentralized communities... not by government, not by Centralized authorities.

There will be rules and anyone who violates them will be automatically detected by bots and penelized by neutral mods.
A wrongly censored post can be reported and sent to some sort of investigative section where it can be transparently looked into with evidences/references by randomly selected mod. The mod will score the post based on the rules it is reported to have broken.

The Rules will be numbered, (more like Ten Commandants) and the Mod/investigator will score the post by ticking which rules it breaks.
The public can also have access to the deleted post to see it is scored correctly.  Investigator can be removed or retained based on all their total scores accuracy.
In the end, we will have a nice self-regulated community that is fair & transparently regulated and everybody will be happy

Is that similar to how Reddit mods work? I wonder if there would have to be some voting system set in place

I still don't see it 100% safe and secured though we can't deny the fact that having a good domain is really an advantage.
I'm just looking for an assurance that no domain provider could access my own domain in the future.
If they could guarantee that, then I guess it's right to purchase some for security.
