Is there a standard way to view balances on the majority of bitcoin clone currencies? I imagine exchanges are doing this. If I check some of the major ones, I can use the blockchain explorers but how is this typically done?

Does this help? It is data pulled from a block explorers api which is linked to a node/wallet for that coin

I'm familiar with coinmarketcap, but I'm unclear on how to check individual balances for all alts. For a random alt like, worldcoin, how would I check the balance for a given account?

Sorry i misunderstood you earlier; you can use Coinplorer if you trust a sites database to do this. If not, then you will need to learn how to use the  coins public ledger to retrieve this data yourself.
There are many ways to do this.
