2020: Biggest Political Possible Outcomes of 2020

What do you think might be the biggest political decisions/outcomes/issue/events/highlights/possibilities of the year 2020?

In no particular order, here are some of mine from a big list including some very far-fetched ones but they are possibilities nonetheless:


1- Trump impeached but not removed from office

2- USA Presidential elections regardless of Trump being re-elected or a Democrat winning

3- Extension of 6+ month to Brexit on 31st December 2020 to extend negotiations

4- Civil war breaks out in Venezuela with the US backing the opposition and Russia backing the government

I'll comment on yours first:
1. His "exoneration" was inevitable once the impeachment was formalised. This is indeed big news, despite being entirely expected, due to its implications for western democracy.
2. Trump re-election would not be big news. Sanders winning would be huge, globally, a first successful fight back by the left against the populist demagogues who are shouldering their way to power across the world.
3. Meh. It could go on for decades. I think public interest will reduce to tedium quite quickly.
4. Could happen. US/Russia proxy wars are kind of old hat. It would be more of a shock to see China get involved.

Four of my own below. I'l continue the numbering to avoid confusion

5 - SEC approves a bitcoin ETF. There's got to be a genuine chance of this happening, after they approved the Stone Ridge futures fund a couple of months back.
6 - Iran starts and slowly ramps up attacks against US (and allies') interests. I think this would have started already, were it not for the incident with the missiles and the Ukrainian plane, which has led Iran to lie low for a while. But it would be a mistake to think they'll forget or just go away. They won't.
7 - The world's first war over water. A taste of things to come as climate change takes hold and fresh water becomes a hugely valuable commodity. Tensions have been brewing for years about the Ethiopian dam on the Nile, and its effects on the countries downstream, notably Egypt. We are familiar with conflict over oil; in the future it will be water. Ever wondered why China is so protective of the Tibetan plateau? It's the world's largest non-polar repository of freshwater, and the source of the major rivers. Future conflict with a thirsty India to the south has to be a concern.
8 - Vegetarianism disappears. ... because veganism is becoming huge. For decades, being vegetarian was a big thing, whilst vegans were the weird extremists. Now veganism is pushing towards the mainstream, and vegetarianism is becoming little more than a meaningless half-way point on the road. It's a parallel to modern politics, where extreme right and extreme left own the stage and moderates are no longer relevant.

Yes unfortunately the thread never really took off, it seems to be buried under the others. You can go ahead and start the threads, I will respond to them  

Regarding the water, I think Egypt and Ethiopia have resolved their differences but it will only be temporary - something will happen between them based around the dam, I am fairly sure of that but maybe beyond 2020. The interesting take about Tibet and the need for India to have access to parts of its water from that plateau is very interesting though.

And vegetarianism, well vegans are definitely the in thing at the moment but not sure if that means vegetarians are on their way out.

Nah.

The biggest would be the fall of the CCP.
Second the fall and execution of Xi.
Third the independence of Hong Kong.
Fourth the formal declaration of statehood by Taiwan followed by recognition of major powers.

All those are, because of the coronavirus, possible but I don't think probable and certainly not likely.

Fifth more nations leave the EU.

Venezuela's biggest (recent) debt is to China. I really don't see the US giving a fuk about Venezuela. The banks have already written off the money they lent in the 1990s.

Trump is not going to be impeached. The Dems will not play that game again. And, if they do, they will look even further out of touch then they do now.

All of the ones you listed are serious possibilities but Corona stands out - it has already given a headache to the world, I hope that a cure will be found soon.

I feel that most of these events listed out here won’t ever happen, as Trump’s impeachment trial is already over and he’s been acquitted. Also no one can touch Xi as he’s got unlimited powers in case you have forgotten about them, so rest assured he’s not going to be executed. Lastly Hongkong is not going to get independence anytime soon, unless Trump decides he wishes to buy their independence but that also isn’t happening.

Impeaching Trump was a stupid move from the Dems. He was always going to be acquitted by the Senate anyway, that was zero surprise to anyone.
Trump as a politician fits exactly the mould of the populist demagogues that now seem to be sweeping to power everywhere from India to Brazil. His entire position is as an outsider railing against the injustices and corruption of the state. Why the Dems ever thought that employing the weaponry of the state against Trump was a good idea or could ever be effective is beyond me. Everyone who thought he was corrupt now already thought so before the impeachment. Everyone who thought he was innocent - or at least not legally guilty - before still thinks so now. What the impeachment did was to further entrench his current support, and then win him new supporters, given that his technical acquittal by a partisan senate can very easily be spun into a vindication by impartial champions of justice.

Even though they knew the senate would acquit Trump maybe they went ahead with it anyway because they thought it would have a positive effect for the Democrats in the November election - who knows?

I think Trump is going to win easily. Take a look one of the three key swing states, Ohio, is considered red. And after the Virginia Dems tried to ram through their gun confiscation laws I think that Pennsylvania and Michigan are going to be easier wins for Trump than in 2016.

There is more chance of a Trump blow-out victory than a Democrat victory. Dems better hope they don't lose 50+ seats in the House.

As someone who is pro-Trump, I would argue that in the right hands, skilled players, with the right strategy, Democrats could have effectively destroyed Trump. But not only did they not succeed in that, they played stupid moves at every move. They put their amateurish game right out in front of everyone.

Why show everyone what an idiot you are? But that's what they did.
