I've been enjoying the quality information in this thread. Many valid points being made for very valid reasons. However I do have to say nothing makes my day better to wake up to and I see several coins have been peeled. Peelonomics! Grin

I know what you mean! As a side question, I have done some research but have been unable to find an answer, does anyone know what kind of paper and ink/toner Mike used in the Casascius coins? It could make a big difference as to how long the private keys will exist for. It could also push the price of older Slabbed coins higher, although I have not been able to find out a way to work out when a coin was slabbed. It appears ANACS and ICG do not give out the information online about the date a coin was slabbed, not sure if contacting them would help, I doubt they want to answer questions like that.

yeah i think it will be ANACS yellow slab > green slab > ungraded particularly if someone is concerned about counterfeiting. the slab puts an upper bound on when the coin was in possession and slabbed which futureproofs against any new counterfeiting vectors that are yet to be discovered.

Wow that's something I've never even thought about personally and never thought I'd have to think about to be honest. So it's a very valid question if it's something we as collectors do potentially have to worry about. I'm sure many more people on here who have been around alot longer than I have can and may have some of these answers/knowledge etc....Again this is turning into a great thread! Phenomenal question. Can anyone answer this? It's a legit question? Can these collectibles stand for years and the privkey will be there? Wow so much to consider especially as BTC rises in value vs most currencies mainly the USD.

There's stuff I've printed out 30 years ago on the nastiest paper with the crappiest printer that's still absolutely fine. I can only think of faxes that have faded away. Something weird would have to happen for anything printed normally not to last for a very lengthy time.

All the same I'm sure he wasn't expecting these things to be cherished for thousands of years.

There are a lot of variables involved. I feel better about engraved metal personally, but Casascius coins definitely have a great track record for being readable when peeled. If they weren’t readable, I don’t think owners have any recourse at this point.

yeah, as far I understand from the research I have done, most ink/paper combinations should last 50 years, but very few combinations will last 100 years. Some will last 1000's of years, and some will be lucky to last 10.

So probably not a huge issue right now, but it could become something people start to worry about in another 10 years, and I am planning to keep mine forever, which is why I started thinking about it.

Wow, really? These things are getting cheap. I wonder if they’ll ever get a collectors premium again.

If that's true then it's now less than the value of the shitforks plus selling the empty coin. Throw in security and shipping concerns and you'd have to be a true believer, and somewhat charitable, not to peel it instead of selling.

Looks like the peel price on a 0.5 BTC Casascius Coin is currently about 0.525 BTC.  Peeling and selling the empty coin would likely be more profitable and less risky but a bit more of a hassle.  I'm curious if we're beginning to see a discount for reasons like fear of damaging during peel, being unable to claim correctly, no faith the BTC is really there, etc...  Prefork BTC are only becoming rarer as the days pass.  You'd think that would make for a premium at some point.

Yeah I've been thinking about this ever since the unique hybrid Cas/Lealana sold for face value:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5250832.0

The risk of shipping is such that I think we will see more and more coins just get peeled. The other side of the argument is that the kind of people that collect coins are probably more likely to take a small hit so as not to destroy part of bitcoins history.

What's going on it the world right now is probably also having an effect. I know I didn't bid on the above, purely because I don't trust international postage right now, I've had some 1BTC coins take nearly a month, it's too stressful. Plus throw in less people with extra bitcoin to spend in uncertain economic times / more people needing cash for one reason or another, bitcoin at reasonable prices historically, especially in non US denominated currencies, lots of headwinds for the time being. I know I won't be able to travel internationally for at least a year, which means certain coins are just off the agenda. If bitcoin does another 10x, I probably would not bid on anything greater than 0.1.

Lots of uncertainty right now, which always means people are more conservative with their money. I know I have been tracking a few coins I want to add to my collection, and going through past auctions there have been a few in the last 6 months which didn't sell at auction, and when I look them up they got peeled soon after.

I'd shit bricks waiting for 1 btc coins, with current price it would kinda be worth to do the trade in person, small vacation see the land but you can't even fly for them.

Also, I think everyone waiting for pics here, if you open a thread it's first thing i'd expect.

Yes I am being a bit slow regarding pics. Currently trying to put all my free time into sorting out an Electrum/Trezor issue I have right now.

I've taken some photos but want to wipe metadata from them before uploading, was aiming to get sorted tonight but might have to wait while I sort the other issue. (On that note, if anyone has a good deal of experience with both electrum and trezor and is willing to go through some steps in real time for a bit odd coin then please get in touch).

I will aim to get the photos up latest tomorrow night though

edit: I keep faling for this one... I really want one but I really don't want one... like this is 10000000% impulse buy

With premiums so piddling there's no longer anything holding anyone who desires one back, other than potential ball ache moving it on in future. Absolute worst case scenario you'll be down 0.02 or something. If that's millions of dollars that's a nice problem to have.

Since the private key is under the hologram...wouldnt this protect the paper and ink as well a bit..thus decrease the paper wallets deterioration rate over time?

Well thankfully nobody was waiting on the pics or anything because this turned into a informative and knowledgeable thread on it's own so ty for that. However if you don't mind throw us some pics just to feed us something. Otherwise let us know next year when you produce the pics. Before next halving would be cool!
