No seed in Electrum after moving from Multibit HD

Hi, I have moved from MultibitHD to Electrum, but the SEED in the menu is grayed out and also it does not show the seed icon right below.
I have followed these instructions: https://youtu.be/E-KcY6KUVnY
I think it worked out well, cause I can see the right amount in Electrum, but as you can understand I like to have a wallet with a SEED..
And without the seed, I'm not really in the experimental mood ;-)
So could someone please help me step by step explaining how to create a new wallet in Electrum, with a seed, and how to get my coins in there ?
Thank you so much.

This is well-known problem when you use MultibitHD seed in Electrum wallet because of different derivation paths. So to get your BTC in wallet with seed you should send them in transaction. You just click on File-New/Restore and create new wallet :

Select :

1.Standard Wallet
2.Create A New Seed
3.Write 12 Words Very Carefully
4.Use Strong Password To Protect Your Wallet
5.Send Your BTC From "Old" Electrum wallet To New Address(Electrum With Seed)

You do not need to download new Electrum to performs this procedure, just give your new wallet unique name. Also enable manual fee and check Replaceable option in case you need to add extra fee to your transaction. My advice is to wait 2-3 days with sending transaction in order to pay lower fee due to high number of unconfirmed transaction.

Hi Lucius, thanks for your reply !  two questions:

-1 "Write 12 Words Very Carefully" Is this a new seed that I make myself, or is it the old MultibitHD seed ?

-2 "My advice is to wait 2-3 days with sending transaction in order to pay lower fee due to high number of unconfirmed transaction" I'm not sure: wait 2-3 days after doing what exactly ?

thank you for your time !

He's telling you to create a new wallet. However you don't really have to do this. You can continue using your current wallet and should you need to restore from seed in the future then use the multibit seed again in the same way you did before. So your seed is your old multibit HD seed.

Electrum does NOT store BIP39 seeds in the wallet files it creates when you restore from a BIP39 seed (like the one from MultiBit HD)... instead, it ONLY stores the Master Private Key (aka "xprv") in the wallet file.

The downside is that you are unable to "view" your seed using the menu option. You will need to retain your offline copy of the seed.

If this bothers you, do as instructed above and create a "native" Electrum seed using: File -> New\Restore -> Standard Wallet -> Create a new seed

Yes,I was thinking on new seed you can get if you create new wallet in Electrum,it is most important thing you need to save.Regarding transaction, since there is too many unconfirmed transaction these days I just give you advice to wait before send your BTC from "old" Electrum wallet to "new",just to try save some BTC on transaction fee.

On the other hand you can listen to advice from Abdussamad and use that seed from Multibit, you will save some money Smiley

Hello. Have the same problem. I migrated from Multibit to Electrum, so I have no seed. And now I need to get bsv from this address, but can`t find the possibility to get that seed or restored from private key without seed. Would you be so kind to share some ideas about how to resolve this?

So, you've imported your Multibit HD seed to Electrum before?
There's no seed in the seed option because it's only available for native Electrum seed phrase while Multibit's is BIP39 seed.

You can easily get your BSV from Electrum [Bitcoin - BTC] (given that you've never spent your coins prior to BCH fork),
by importing its master private key to ElectrumSV by creating a new wallet and use "Add Account->Import Keys from Text->paste your Electrum's master prv key".
You can get the master private key from Electrum by going to "Console" tab (View->Show Console),
then type getmasterprivate() and input your password.

Take care of the mpk as it's as sensitive as the seed phrase.

I`ve migrated by the wallet file.

Thank you! I will look into your information.
I see, your wallet file must be from older Electrum versions, <3.3.8;
because the ones created by 4.x.x and 3.3.8 produced errors or didn't open last time I tried (reference for other readers).
Note that it wont work with BCH electrum fork "electron cash", you can use my posted method though.

You can also export the address(es) private key individually if there's only a few that have old coins.
Open addresses tab (View->Show Addresses), right click on the address and select "private key".

Hello. Have the same problem. I migrated from Multibit to Electrum, so I have no seed.
I`ve migrated by the wallet file.
That's not possible. Electrum does not read multibit wallet files. So, you either used a MultiBit HD seed, or you must have exported your private keys from multibit, then imported those private keys into Electrum. Does your Electrum wallet say "[Standard]" or "[Imported]" at the top? Huh

In any case, regardless of whether you used a BIP39 seed or imported private keys, you should still be able to see your private keys within Electrum... simply use the "Wallet -> Private Keys -> Export" option:

That will export all the generated private keys...

if you just want the private key for a specific address, you can goto the "Addresses" tab (you might need to use "View -> Show Addresses" first), then right click on an address, and select "private key":

I think it's the solution he found by himself, he must be talking about Electrum wallet file to ElectrumSV wallet.
Because it's possible to directly open the wallet file from old Electrum versions by newer ElectrumSV, I've tried it months/a year ago.

Perhaps it should only be noted that before any import of seeds or private keys into the fork wallet (in this case BCH or BSV), the BTC should be moved to a new wallet (not just a new address in the same wallet) - because this ensures that in case something goes wrong (fake wallet) we don't lose Bitcoin.

While this is something that has been repeated for years, I've got the impression that some crypto users think BTC must be at the address they're going to use for a fork claim - and that's only true in the part that says BTC must be at an address when fork happens - after that the balance of that address can be 0, but that does not mean that such an empty private key cannot be used to claim a certain fork coin.

Thanks a lot everyone!!
It is "imported" variant and I had used wallet file to import in Electrum (in any case I have no the seed).
Now I`m trying to fix ElectrumSV problems). Initially it was unable to process the wallet file transfer, now it can`t be run and downloaded at computer.
And yes, I have withdrawn btc and bsv.

Yes, this means you exported private keys from your previous wallet... and imported them into Electrum. There is no seed in such a case... only private keys stored in the Electrum wallet file. As per my previous message, you should be able to use "Wallet -> Private Keys -> Export" to retrieve these private keys, and then simply import them into ElectrumSV.

Now I`m trying to fix ElectrumSV problems). Initially it was unable to process the wallet file transfer, now it can`t be run and downloaded at computer.
It's possible that ElectrumSV is attempting to re-open the wallet file that it can't read (due to wallet file format updates that aren't in ElectrumSV) and is crashing.

I would suggest that you try and remove the config file from the "C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Roaming\ElectrumSV" folder, then try restarting ElectrumSV. That should "factory reset" ElectrumSV so it doesn't try to open the old wallet file and it should start up normally.

Then you can create a new wallet file, and import your private keys from Electrum.

Or if you want your configuration intact: rename that wallet file into something else so it can't be found by ElectrumSV.

To import the keys from Electrum, use the method that I've posted for master prv key before, it'll also recognize a prv key:
You can easily get your BSV from Electrum [Bitcoin - BTC] (given that you've never spent your coins prior to BCH fork),
by importing its master private key to ElectrumSV by creating a new wallet and use "Add Account->Import Keys from Text->paste your Electrum's master prv key".
