Why would you wish to withdraw the merit you've given to someone already! at first you gave it to this person because you know or see that he/she merits it. Whatever the person does next should not bother you. It just like casting a vote for Trump, then after the election results has been declared, you are now demanding for change of vote If the withdrawal of merit is possible, this forum would have been a play ground, with different stories

There are abusers already handing out merit for future support. Can you imagine the blackmail if merit could be taken back?

Withdrawing a merit, what does it mean? Do you mean undone, reverse a merit transaction that you sent yours to another one? If it is the question you are asking, answer is No. Click on the merit from right top of my post, you will see the page, at the bottom, the message is "This cannot be undone!" Reverse merit transaction can only be done by admin in very few abused situations. It happened but not much. If your idea is applied on the forum, as a rule, it will create a chaotic status for member ranks (they move up then demoted to lower rank) and other things, drama. In addition, merit is not expensive to think of reverse it.

What do you mean by withdrawing merit? Giving back merit to other people?. If that so don't expect if you give merit to other people because still, it depends on your content and quality if they think you deserve to have this too why not give it to you back also. You cant give merit to your self will just prompt an error. Reverse merit transaction can only be done by admin in very few abused situations. It happened but not much. If your idea is applied on the forum, as a rule, it will create a chaotic status for member ranks (they move up then demoted to lower rank) merit is not expensive to think of reverse it.
AFAIK I saw a member received a -40 merit but I can't find anymore the profile I forgot.

You can't take back a merit which you have already given out. It's like a bullet fired from a gun hence, think very much before meriting someone and check whether their posts really deserve merit or not in the first place. But don't be like a strict teacher, if you like someone's post or it gives you good information, just send a merit or two. It's alright, and it doesn't harm your account since you are sending smerits and not merits from your own account haha

Only theymos can do it in case of merit abuse from the merit sources. But it can't be considered as negative merit he just reversing the merits awarded and it happened with a merit source when he announced that he will merit anyone who posts anything below his post.

You can't. I believe you're also looking for the "demerit" function. Quoted from theymos' post. ...
There is currently no such thing as a "demerit". I'm hoping that the positive merits alone will be fine. I could add demerits pretty easily later on if necessary, though.

By and large it looks like OP is simply referring to a demerit system, well, about that, here's what Theymos had to say about it: There is currently no such thing as a "demerit". I'm hoping that the positive merits alone will be fine. I could add demerits pretty easily later on if necessary, though.
Since the merit system was introduced, the topic of demerit has come up quite a few times, with some good discussions on it, here's one started by LoyceV, OP you could read that thead to get an insight into what you are asking and why it hasn't or will prolly not be implemented: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5033455.0It doesn't look like a demerit system will be introduced sooner or later, but even if it is, OP, I'm not sure you'd be able to demerit a post by yourself, as I think it'll be privileged to either mods, staffs, admin or selected reputable users to do that, just allowing every user to demerit a post will be grossly abused.

Only theymos can do it in case of merit abuse from the merit sources. But it can't be considered as negative merit he just reversing the merits awarded and it happened with a merit source when he announced that he will merit anyone who posts anything below his post. I didn't understand that negative merits case, but now with the explanation about theymos being able to remove them, it makes sense. AFAIK, it is not just the fact that it is not possible for you to eliminate a given merit, as it was a like on Facebook or Twitter, but that merits stay unchanged even when the merited post is erased. Anyway, you are shown a disclaimer each time you press the "send merit" button, which states that it can't be undone.

A desire of taking back a given merit means that you do not think the post is worth your merit any more or simply your personal preferences, like you found it good yesterday and just "changed your mind" the next day. So, don't merit someone if you are not sure about giving that merit, first of all. And regarding the second scenario of "frequent changing mind", I have no idea.

yes, reverse a merit transaction.
Simple answer, you can't. The bitcointalk merit system is not meant to be facebook's like / unlike.

Like what others have said, the Merit system won't change just because some wanted to retract their submissions.
If points are infinite like Reddit, Facebook, that's totally fine but over here, rank is involved so that's gonna leave a huge mess. Even on some other forum when points are earned from posting, you can't just retract them after sending once they're given away.
