I wanted to make a starter 6gpu mining rig but have no idea what to look for when searching a GPU.

Would this for example be suitable?

I'm also planning to build a 6x gpu next week, I've already order some gpu but I have a hard time choosing between gtx1660 super and rx5500xt, they are both very good for mining but rx5500xt have a upper hand because it's 8gb supported, gtx1660 super has 6gb

The gtx1660 has 6gb, if you are building a mining rig for future proof its better to buy a 8gb video ram gpu, by 2024 those GPUs with 6gb will be obsolete to mine Ethereum, that is if Ethereum POW algorithm still works

You can consider a rx580 8gb if you can find one for cheap price, they do 30mhs on Ethereum or buy RX5500XT but there is no bios mod to push this card to 30mhs yet, maybe we will see one in future, who knows? The reason why I like the RX5500XT is less energy consumption and it so 27mhs with just 65watts

Nice GPU. The problem can be 6GB of memory, but for mining ETH it will be enough for a several years. This is NVIDIA - it means that you can mine easily various coins. Last such a coin i saw was octopus not long ago. For start it can be wise decision to buy such GPUs for first training rig.

Its possible to reach 30.04 mh/s at 70w with the gtx1660 super doing few tricks but you can't get 30mh on a rx5500xt, the only advantage that the AMD have over the Nvidia is less power/energy consumption and the 6gb memory which can last only 4years for mining Ethereum

I've never seen anyone using egpu to mine before, can't even find a video about it anywhere, it's a shame you don't have a compatible device to put this to test, I really want to see how it will work, what a waste, before selling or returning if seller can collect it back I suggest you find a laptop that supports TB 3 connection to see how it will work, you can be surprised

1660 super is okay, you can get 30-31 MH/s @70-80 watt and the resale value is better than Amd counterpart. Other alternative is 3060ti If you can get it (2x performance for double the price, better resale value later)

Don't worry yourself about future proof or not, it will take good four years for Ethereum Dag file to enter 6gb size and you would have make 3x of your ROI before that time arrives, its a good buy, also less electricity power consumption is a huge plus

They are ok for mining as you can get stable 30 megahash rate from each, I'm still planning to build a rig with this gtx1660 super, four or six pieces, before the six gigabyte space runs out you will definitely make more returns already

Not everyone mines just ETH though

I like to mine lower-cost and difficulty coins sometimes early on, they might get big later and you got some stock on a wallet HODLing  Cheesy

I'm also planning to build a 6x gpu next week, I've already order some gpu but I have a hard time choosing between gtx1660 super and rx5500xt, they are both very good for mining but rx5500xt have a upper hand because it's 8gb supported, gtx1660 super has 6gb

Thanks for the tips. I also thought best was to buy GPU's that are worth 500-600EUR, then after I learn how to build them and experiment a bit, see if I like it I could start buying €1k+ gpus.

Is it a decent idea to invest in cards like 3090, once I am 100% sure I want to expand my farm?

The 3090 is a poor mining card pick.

In that order assuming they are available now and priced correctly

Thanks for the info!

I assume it will be quite a hard time trying to find these cards, even locally  Smiley

Lower cost coins might become big later like you said OP but be careful with less difficulty coins, I used to have that mentality in the past that if I can mine some new coins and hold they might be big in future but I was wrong, all those coins turn into scam projects

Thanks for the info. I guess I will do many, many research before mining some newer lower-difficulty coins!
