Hi

I have a key and was wondering if anyone knows which crypto currrency it belongs to?

It starts with TMWgDA5 and end with 3zJK7No

I think it is a public key (but it might be a private key!) - just wondered which crypto it belongs to - is there an easy way to find out?

Thanks
Stephen

Here're some questions.

  • Where did you get it from? Is it yours?
  • If yes, which ones have you bought?
  • How long is it?

It is definitely not Bitcoin. The public keys in Bitcoin start with “02” or “03” while the private keys are usually represented in WIF and start with either “K”, “L” or “5”.

Hi

Thanks for coming back to me so fast.

No it is not mine, however I was given by the family of the previous owner - he sadly died.

The public key that starts with TMWgDA5 and end with 3zJK7No is 34 characters long.

The other key - which I think is an associated private key is in Hex and 63 characters long (perhaps a leading 0 missing to make it 64 characters long) - it starts with 73cedc8e7 ... and end 10dc7078

Thanks for your help.

It's tron address, I have been checking it and it starts with T and it's also having 34 characters long. You can check the availability of such address on the tron scan. https://tronscan.org/

Your criterias were matching with the tron address. I guess you can check it on tronscan and you may see what tokens or coins that available in your tron wallet.

By the way, it's a good idea to integrate in some crypto related portal! A service which helps you to understand what blockchain it is and maybe some other useful details.

Yes, as said by @asriloni
That is Tron's wallet address. And please check whether he had a Tronlink wallet or not.
And for the private key, never tell anyone else whether he is willing to help you, never trust everyone that asks about the private key.
And you can now start to learn about the Tron wallet.
Yes, the private key should include 64-bit hexadecimal characters.
You can try to log in on the Tronlink or in https://tronscan.org/ (but ensure that the private key is correct) because missing one character means you may not be able to log in.

Thanks for all your help in identifying which crypto currency this public key was from.

Is anyone aware of a website that tells you the various formats of public keys/private keys of the main crypto currencies?

I guess what you are looking for is a block explorer[1] and I think blochair will help you determine which type of network corresponds to the wallet address you have. But mostly, the starting letter of an address is a hint to identify which cryptocurrency you're looking for.

I'm not aware of such website.

But what I can think of is you can try to use BIP39 tools(https://iancoleman.io/bip39/). I'm not sure that is what you actually need, but as a surface, it will give you public/private keys on various cryptocurrencies, since most major altcoins are already supported by HD wallets.

Upon opening that website, just click "GENERATE" to create a random mnemonic. Then, on the "Coin" form, select the cryptocurrency you want. After that, you should be able to see the chosen cryptocurrency public/private keys in the "Derived Addresses" section.

I think you listed out many cryptocurrencies. You then compare the generated keys with the key you are looking for. This is a bit time consuming, but I think it will help you. See which one matches, it's the money you need. If it is a private key, do not share it with any individuals or organizations. Good luck to you!

Thanks again for all your help - I am always a little hesitant to use online websites to check sensitive things e.g. private keys!

Is anyone aware of a tool (prefeerably offline) that will convert a HEX private key to a Base58 private key (i.e. into WIF format) ?

Thanks
Stephen

If I might ask, what are you trying to achieve?

Could you confirm the key you stated above is Tron? have you tried to successfully restore it? Or are you still finding which cryptocurrencies that private keys are associated with?

Usually, we can understand which Blockchain this specific address belongs to based on the first characters. For example, wallets created on Ethereum start with 0x. Talking about your sample, I have just checked my Tron address and my public key also starts with T, so I think that this address is from the Tron chain.
