Using Electrum for the first time. I have about 10USD in BTC in my wallet, i went to make a small purchase and it was inquiring about a fee. As i seen, there wasnt a work around it, so i chose the smallest fee (static is what i chose) and turned the slider all the way down to where it was about a .000023BTC fee. After proceeding with the purchase, My wallet is now in debt? "[-0.000109 unconfirmed]". I've never used electrum before, so im very confused. It now seems that i have no BTC in my wallet nor did i get what i was attempting to purchase. Anyone up to help??

You are not in dept, it means the transaction has been broadcasted. But do not yet think the transaction is confirmed, that fee can not get Bitcoin transaction confirmed this time around.

Yes, it means that amount is subtracted from your wallet. And since it is still unconfirmed, it means, you can't get yet what you purchased as most merchants will give it to you once there's confirmation in your transaction. By the way, is it okay for you to give the transaction id so we can check the status?

Or you can paste the tx id here - https://blockchair.com/. And see for yourself, what priority are you in the network.

You have $10 worth of bitcoin on your electrum wallet, you used 0.000109BTC for the purchase while the fee used is 0.000023BTC, both will amounts to roughly $10 with the current bitcoin price. Which means the bitcoin left on your wallet will be negligible or no bitcoin left on your wallet. Even if assumed you used segwit address and sent to native segwit address, with that fee, the fee rate will be around 21 sat/vbyte, the fee rate will even be lower if used/sent with nested segwit address and much more lower if the address is legacy. The lower the fee rate the less likely transaction will be confirmed in time.

If assuming the fee rate is 21 sat/vbytes or lower, while currently the weekdays just started in which the mempool will likely be congested until weekends again, the mempool is currently at 123 sat/vbyte for now, even if it will reduce, it might not reduced to the fee rate you paid. This means, possibly the transaction can not be confirmed until weekend.

The best to do to get transaction confirmed in time is to pump the fee, but you can not pump the fee even if the transaction support replace-by-fee because no fee to do that, and with your explanation, child-pay-for-parent can not also be used. The best is to wait until the mempool is less congested.

Immediately you made the transaction, the bitcoin balance will be deducted of the amount sent, the transaction will queue in the mempool, the seller you sent it may require the transaction to be confirmed, while I believe the transaction support replace-by-fee which will make it qmore solid reason the transaction must be confirmed before the purchase will be successful. But, the transaction likely not yet confirmed and if so, it will really take time.

To know if the transaction is confirmed, you can check it on blockchain explorer like blockchair.com by pasting the txid into the space provided and search.

After proceeding with the purchase, My wallet is now in debt? "[-0.000109 unconfirmed]".
You're not in "debt"... that is just showing the amount that will (eventually) be debited from your wallet when the transaction is finally confirmed. Basically, it is showing the total amount that has been spent but not yet confirmed.

When you say you've never used Electrum before... how exactly did you get the BTC into the wallet in the first place? Did you import a seed or private keys from another wallet to see your balance etc? Huh How was that $10 worth of BTC received? Did you receive it in one payment, or did you receive it over multiple payments? Huh

I'm just surprised that your fee paid was so high 0.00002300 BTC when you choose "Static" and set it as low as it would go... "Static" should have enabled you to send with 1 sat/vbyte... so if you did that, and the fee was still 2300 sats... it meant that your transaction's "data size" was ~2300 vbytes... which is quite large! Shocked Shocked The usual reason for this is that you have received a lot of small amounts over a period of time (from mining, faucets, micropayment services etc)... which can cause issues as the total fee paid on a transaction is a function of "data size" (and not the amount of BTC being transacted).

If you double click the transaction in the "History" tab in Electrum it will show you the transaction details, how many "inputs" are shown? what is the "size" that is displayed (in bytes)? what is the rate shown for the fee (in sat/byte)?

Electrum transactions have RBF turned on by default, so you can use that feature to increase the fee from 1 sat/vbyte (note: this is what the GUI means when it says 1 sat/byte) to something higher.

1. Right click the unconfirmed transaction and select "Increase Fee"
2. In the dialog that appears, choose a new fee then sign and broadcast the new transaction. It will replace the old one. That's where the Replace in Replace By Fee (RBF) comes from.

Without knowing the number of inputs, it impossible to say whether you have used enough fee for the transaction or now. IIRC, you will see that kind of red (negative) value until the transactions gets included into a block which doesn't mean you are in debt or have to pay further. In BTC it is impossible to have a negative value! Cool

Let's try common terms:
The negative balance that you're seeing is just displayed beside your current balance because it's "pending".
Once it got "processed", it will be deducted from your current balance.

But it comes with a fee so, it may be higher than what you've input in the send tab, it depends on the 'fee rate' that you've selected in the slider and the size of the transaction (not amount).
To check the details, go to the history and double-click (under the date column) the unconfirmed transaction with "red" amount.

Just FYI, I contacted the OP on Discord and managed to walk them through the steps required to use the "bump fee" functionality to increase the transaction fee.

Notes:

- Transaction was RBF
- Transaction was 1 input, 2 output... size was 223 bytes
- Fee used was 1 sat/vbyte (was actually 0.00000223 BTC, NOT 0.0000233 BTC:P)
- After bump fee, increased to 20 sat/vbyte (which immediately got swamped due to no blocks being found for over an hour Undecided)
- However, replacement transaction is now confirmed
- OP decided against moving the rest of the coins from Electrum until fees are a bit lower
