Reissues, in my view, are fantastic in the situation you mentioned: you can get a great Syd Barrett record to listen to without breaking the bank. The majority of the time, though, it moves in the opposite direction. For example, last weekend I was in a shop that was selling a repress of "The Worst of Jefferson Airplane" for $30! That's a record worth $2-$5.

As others have said, I wouldn't bet on represses appreciating in value significantly, but there's no way to know for sure.
