Hello,

I need your help.
I bought 6 Bitmain Antminer S9i, one used and 5 new from a clearance sale.
I got the used one first and one of the cards broke down the same day I received it, I spoke with the seller who assured me that everything was working properly for a long time.
I said it was a stroke of bad luck, but today I lost a second card on that same minor!
What is wrong is that on my 5 new miners, I lose a card almost every week!
How is this possible on new miners? And I'm sure they were brand new, as well as their power supplies.
In the space of one month I already have 4 cards that do not work anymore and 2 that show signs of weakness.
What can I do?
I've already spent hundreds of hours trying to figure out what could have gone wrong, I've reflashed the cards, put the original software on them, no improvement, I've reinstalled Braiins OS+, but no improvement.
I'm really confused, I just invested a lot of money and it doesn't want to work as I can see in others!

Thanks in advance

Mickael

They were probably being overclocked.

The previous owner probably thrashed them with 'non-original' firmware and then sold them as they started to fail ...

Hello,

I want to admit that it was possible on the second hand one, but on the 5 new S9i how to explain that?
They were packed, taped, brand new, not a dust, you can see that they have never been used.
I run them between 800 and 1240 watts, they are in a cool room, they run slowly, the hot air is evacuated through a duct.
Only last night, I still have a card that stopped working!
I don't understand what I could do to solve this problem.
In the space of a few weeks, out of my 18 cards I have already lost 5 and I have two that are showing signs of weakness!

The average failure rate on the S9i should be a lot lower than that, but it's normal to be unfortunate and get a bad batch once in a while, the miner status shows temps are fine and fans aren't even above 50%, what is the relative humidity in the room they operate? if it isn't too high and since temps are good - I don't think there is anything you can do, you just need to accept your bad luck.

Indeed, I think it is a story of bad luck!
The miners are in a non-dusty room, it sucks air between 7°C and 20°C, the humidity is 60 to 70% depending on the day.
I unplugged the cards that didn't work anymore, I'll see from time to time to plug them again in case I have a stroke of luck and they want to start again.
In the meantime, it's for sure that I didn't have any luck!
I was well informed and indeed the S9i are known to be reliable!
That's all, thanks for your answers.

The 20°C inlet temp is fine but colder than that can definitely be a problem. 7°C inlet air temp is far too cold. Miners are designed to run with chip temps that range from rather warm up to pretty hot -- as in up to 80C and even higher.

Query: Are they more stable at the higher temps? They should be.

Ok thanks for the info 😉

I had understood that a lot of mining farms in the extreme cold, for example in Siberia were running much colder air through their miners.
Maybe to cool down overclocking miners?

In very cold areas, the inlet air temp is controlled by throttling the airflow into and/or out of the building as needed to have the miners run at desired chip temps. Other than what incoming air temp is needed to keep reasonable chip temps, over clocking does not enter into the equation.

BTW: Overclocking is a very bad idea as it places great stress on the miners and PSU's which shortens their life not to mention the fact that miners have substantially less power efficiency when OC'd.

Okay, I understand better.
Thank you for this valuable information.

-----------
There is definitely something wrong!
What could decimate all my cards one after another?
I just lost another one of my cards!
This one on the S9i bought second hand 1 month ago.
First card lost the same day of the startup! the second one 5 days ago and the third one 1h ago!
As is possible there must be something that disturbs all this!
Is it the vibrations?
They are fixed by two by the aluminium slide on the side of the miners.
They are in a multi-storey sound insulation box with air baffle at the entrance and exit.
The card was working great at 4.5 / 5 ths, then all of a sudden 0!
I can see the 63 Asics, but nothing else!
I'm really angry, I'm investing in something I'm interested in and all I get is worries, yet I can read so many stories of people who have no worries for years, miners filled with dust that heats up but continues to mine!
I want to believe that there is a bad luck, but I think that there is a technical factor that comes into play!
When I see the reliability of these machines it is absolutely not normal!
On two of my new S9i, no way to exceed 9Th/s with 3 cards!
However, on the five new S9i, everything was working fine when I put them into operation about 3 weeks ago.
They were set on 800w and I had 10,41 Th/s !

Can you post the kernel log for one of the gears that recently went down? I also want you to try and disconnect all miners and keep only one running for 2-4 hours to see if acts any differently, if that's the case i'll tell you exactly what to troubleshoot, if the room is too cold try to set static fan speed using this trick, set the fans to 20% and watch them closely, you don't want them too cold or too hot.

I invested about 2 BTC in 17 series gears and some junky S9ks, all the S9ks are now in the trash and at least 80-90% of the 17 series is down, as of today's rate that's above 100k, you need to accept the fact that you are buying mining gears from a Chinese manufacturer that has little to no quality control and couldn't care less about the miners quality, it's a part of the game you are playing, just like when you open a shop and nobody shows up to buy anything, shit happens, don't blame yourself.

Hello and thank you very much for taking care of my case.
It's really crazy that you lost your 17 S9K so quickly!
Herewith the Kernel Log from Braiins Os.
I have separated my miner #1 from the others, it is the used one.
To test I also replaced the power supply by a new one.
12,15v at the output of the old one, and exactly the same at the output of the new one.
I just reconnected all the cards, and the one that stopped working last night started again with 2.2 Th/s at 800w. (it continues to make the auto adjustment, after 15 minutes I am at 2.7 Th/s).
For the moment the 6 and 8 are not working.
For the n°6, it was fine, 63 Asics, 4 to 5 Th/s, and suddenly 0.
For the n°8, it went from 63 Asics, to 28 the day I received it. Knowing that it was my very first miner, so no disturbance of the others and no sound box yet.

I tried setting the power limit to 1280, the card became stable at 4.5 Th/s for about 20 minutes, then like yesterday it collapsed all at once! And the fans start spinning at 100% all the time.
I'll try leaving it for several hours at 800W power limit, I'll see if it crashes or not!

--------------------------
About 1 1/2 hours at 800w, good rate and then collapse all of a sudden and fan at 100%.
I don't know what's going on!?!
I do a reboot and it goes back on! I just turned it down to 700w.

--------------------------
Test at 700w, it stalls in less than 10 minutes !
Test at 600w, it stalls in less than 10 minutes !
Test at 500w, it stalls in less than 10 minutes !
Test at 400w conclusive for the moment already 3h40, from time to time the 63 or 62 Asics appear on the card 6 and it but to work a few minutes and disappears.
On the other hand on card 6 when it is active at a lot of HW Error Hashrate, about 425 Mh/s.
On the other hand I have this error message, I do not know too much to what it corresponds. (It disappears when the card 6 starts working).

https://i74.servimg.com/u/f74/18/79/46/39/erreur10.jpg

After 12 hours it's still running at 400w, I set the fans in manual mode at 30%, the temperature is 60°C, the status is still in running mode and during the night the card n°6 is mining with 62 Asics but the temperature is still at 0°C. I will leave it like that for now and try to increase slowly.
"I don't have this error message anymore on the card n°6 while it is running"
After 12 hours, normal error rate.

Can you try this firmare (Antminer-S9i-xilinx-201907302056-autofreq-user-Update2UBI-NF-sig.tar.gz) you can download it here https://service.bitmain.com/support/download?product=Antminer%20S9i

Keep in mind this is a secured firmware, which means if you want to go back to custom firmware you will need to use an Sdcard.

Hello,

No worries, I'll take care of it when I get back from work, around 5pm in France.
Another problem, I did not have time to take care of it before leaving for work but on one of my new S9i, it seems that I lost a card and half of another during the night!
Could the fact that it was stored for 3 years in a closet have damaged the minors?
It was running at about 14.5Th/s at 1280w and the more I check the monitoring on SlushPool the more it drops, currently 6.4Th/s.
I could send you the Kernel Log.

Thank
Mickael

I installed the version you asked me.
In normal setting the map n°6 is not displayed, after 6 minutes it was displayed and put the miner out of mining a bit like it does on Braiins Os+. At least I have updated the page the time remains on 6min26s.
In improved low power mode I see the 3 cards, but only the 7 (63Asics) and the 8 (28 Asics) work. And strange thing the miner stopped exactly as before at 6min39s.
In Hashrate unchanged-Lower Voltage mode, the card n°6 was working at 4.6Th/s for less than a minute and then it stopped.
Disturbingly, it froze again at 6min31s! It is still very strange!
If I change a parameter, it restarts and freezes every 6min30s!
In mode -3Th/s, no card 6 to display. Only map 7 works. Miner stopped working at 6min59s.
In +2Th/s mode, no card 6 to display. No card is working even though the time is still running. After 20 minutes still no blocking, but 0Th/s.
I put back in normal mode, no card 6 to display. No work on the cards. After about 30 minutes the display went from 0 to 3.5Th/s on card #7.
I notice that about every 6 min30s the miner freezes and goes to 0Th/s, after a few minutes I have the impression that it restarts and starts producing again for about 6min30s. At least the elapsed time goes back to 0m01s for about 6 min30s.
Here is the Kernel Log on the Bitmain page.

I reinstalled Braiins Os+, I was afraid that it would be damaged even more with all these restarts.
It's strange how it cuts, under Braiins Os+ I tried 400w, 500w, 600w, for the moment no cut, the fan is in manual at 90%.
I made a test at 1000w, cut in less than 20 seconds. I went back to 600w.

I suggest you go to Miner > Configuration and scroll down to Autotuning, and use a power limit value of 1280.

Also, in Temperature Control, lower the Target Temp to 85°, leave the rest of the values default (delete them so they go back to defaults).

Just because a board gets disconnected, doesn't necessarily means that its "dead". Braiins OS+ is far more gentler than the others and tends to not use them when in doubt (where other fw would only show the failure when its already too late).

Target Temp also happens to be the pre-heat temperature, your miners won't start hashing until they reach this, so they should be fine in that location, provided you don't have excessive humidity or dry conditions. Also make sure everything is properly grounded.

PS: The command line bos-toolbox has an unlocker for S9s, it allows installing Braiins OS+ remotely when the latest stock firmware is in the miner.

I put back as you advise me, 1280w and temperature 85.
I will try to leave the autotuning longer, the problem is that I have cards that are detected but do not work. I have some that have 0 Asics and others 63 Asics.
The ones with bad cards are still autotuning 24 hours later.

I have two S9i's that often show Tuner Status Failed in red, sometimes it disappears. When this happens I have a card that displays error messages.
"Hashchain refused to start: Enumeration: no chips detected on the current chain"

I have my miner N°1 which restarts without stopping as soon as the power demand exceeds 500w.
I can make a video and send it to you on Telegram if it helps.

Thanks
Mickael
