Strange story here.  Have a friend who put money into crypto in 2017, and was trading on Bittrex.

He neglected the account until last month and Bittrex doesn't want to let him in at all.  He's asked them to remove 2FA so he may access his funds. He's sent them screen shots of every transaction he's made with them, appeared on a video call with them showing his driver's license, etc.

Now they are making this odd request.  They want to see his address in a wallet with his name or email on it. I'm not aware of what wallet would even do this.  Crypto.com DEFI wallet displays the user's name, but after inputting the seed phrase it shows no history.

Bitcoin wallets don't use names or email addresses. What exactly did they ask? It makes much more sense if they asked for a message with his name and email, signed from one of the addresses he used to deposit to Bittrex in the past.

A signed message looks like this:
Code:
-----BEGIN BITCOIN SIGNED MESSAGE-----
I am a user of the bitcointalk.org forum [Radja Rimba] wanting to sign a message. Today, Wednesday 08 September 2021.
-----BEGIN SIGNATURE-----

-----END BITCOIN SIGNED MESSAGE-----
This proves ownership of the address.

Thanks for your response.  I am thinking Bittrex simply doesn't want to release the funds so they ask for the impossible.  Here's the exact quote:

“Is there a screen in your wallet program that shows your wallet address associated with your name or email address or just a list of your wallet addresses?”

In what context did they ask you about that? Or that is the latest message since the last thing they ask(vid call, etc).

Bittrex is an exchange, it is a custodial exchange, which means all funds sent to your bittrex account or your friend's bittrex account is not yours on blockchain, bittrex owns all the coins on blockchain because they have and control the private keys to the bittrex addresses, which makes them to have the full control over all funds sent to bittrex addresses. So, why leaving your coins on a platform you do not have access to the private key? The best is to move all coins on custodial exchanges back into your noncustodial wallet which you have complete control over and protect its seed phrase and the wallet.

If you do not use the wallet that will give the option of username, you will have to tell bittrex customer care about that. Telling them you can sign a message from the address(es) used to make payment into your exchange account. If you use wallet like Electrum, let them know about that and how it is not named your name. Let them know how you can be able to sign a message with the addresses used to send coins to the exchange account which was already stated above.

But never leave funds on exchanges, move all yours coins to a noncustododial wallet to have full control over your coins.

“Is there a screen in your wallet program that shows your wallet address associated with your name or email address or just a list of your wallet addresses?”
Importing the seed on electrum wallet and naming the wallet your name could do that. But why should a wallet require email, noncustododial wallets requires no email. Tell them you can sign a message using the address is the best option to go for. Also never reveal your seed phrase or private key to anyone, be careful of wallet screenshot to never screenshot your seed phrase or private key.

In addition to what Charles-Tim, centralized crypto exchanges are just like the bank and your friend has to do what they ask him to provide since he chooses to leave his coin on their platform for a long time.
Most exchange sites that I have used (Luno, Binance etc) always have solutions for users with 2FA code trouble which provide the private information that is intact with those they have on their network but it seems that Bittrex doesn't want to release your friend coin.

It seems that Bittrex want to establish some sort of link between your friend's name/email address and the bitcoin address that they either deposited from or withdraw coins to.

That's probably going to be quite difficutl, as most wallets don't really use email addresses or account names to access things Undecided

I would say that LoyceV's suggestion is probably going to be the best bet... see if Bittrex will accept a signed message from an address that was used to deposit funds to the Bittrex account.

You friend could use a message like:
Quote
This is INSERTYOURNAME, the date is TODAYSDATE. I am signing a message to prove that I am the owner of email address MY@EMAILADDR.COM and bitcoin address: 1BITCOINDEPOSITADDR that was used to deposit funds to Bittrex Acct: INSERT_BITTREX_ACCT on: INSERT_DEPOSIT_DATE

It's worth a shot...assuming your friend was depositing from a wallet that allows access to private keys or provides a way to sign messages.

Thanks for all your help/advice.  We are going to email and offer to sign a message.

That message I quoted was their last one, after a video meeting with ID, sending them images of prior deposits, etc. etc. etc.

I am aware of basic crypto safety and am fine.  I told my friend not to leave all that on an exchange but he's too lazy (as usual) and now he's paying for it.

IMO, it's hard to link any of your associated addresses that has your username or email address not unless if you're using a custodial wallet too that has an email address may be like Blockchain.com web wallet that has an email address but I don't know how to prove it.

I tend to agree with the suggestion above, a signed message is the best way to prove ownership without the needed username and email address.
But there's a wallet that you cant able to do a signed message feature, you're very lucky if the wallet you have used has this availability of signed message feature.  Here's a tutorial thread on How to sign a message?! and the wallet list that you can't able to sign a message, it's quite an old and inappropriate thread, yet research your own.
