Hi there mining experts,

I'm planning to build a small mining rig using six RTX 3070 TUF GPUs. This card got PCIE 4.0 interface. However most motherboards seems to be having PCIE 3 sockets. Would there be an issue connecting it to a PCIe 3 slot?

Thanks

Hi pal, I have 3070s and 3060ti that are mining as we speak in motherboards with pcie 3.0 slots, you will have no problem running this graphic cards in a motherboard with pcie 3.0 slots, good luck

Thanks a lot @Ceyflix-Rez. Glad to hear you are mining on pice 3.0. There seems to be 4 types of PCIe slots, x1, x4, x8 and x16. Do you use pcie x1 slots or any other type ? I've heard different PCIe slots has different voltage.

The PCIE 3.0 and PCIE 4.0 ports are the same.
On new motherboards that support PCIE 4.0, there is only a limitation on compatibility with older video cards, for example RX 470.
You can find compatibility information in your motherboard documentation. But if you are buying new video cards, then this is not a problem.

nope you its same perfomance on mining cause only small bandwith that use for mining, even pcie.2 still doing fine, your will run those gpus in 1x slot with riser

keep in mind if youre using multi psu, the power riser from psu = the power source psu for gpu power, dont mix with different source power from other psu,

You aren't planning to game on the motherboard right? The truth is mining doesn't care about pcie 2.0, 3.0 or even 4.0 so don't bother yourself with this, the only way you can see difference is when trying to play PC games which 4.0 pcie slot will perform better

What you need is riser for the graphic cards so either x1 or x4 or x16 they will all work with risers and make sure the riser you buying is 007 or 009, I don't have much lucks with the older risers, just check the number and buy they work so well

Have you watched the 3.0 pcie and 4.0 pcie benchmarks in games?
The performance gain is noticeable only in synthetic tests, while in gaming tests the increase is from 1 to 10%.
But 10% is under certain conditions. I will not write links for you, you can independently find the test results in Google.
Soon, video card manufacturers are promising 5.0 pcie.

I'm guessing the pcie 5.0 will make a big difference in games but still not mining unless a new type of algorithm is been built and used to utilize the mining algorithm somehow but the chances of that happening is very little, with the way gaming world is going I believe they have reached the limit of graphical power for now

I'm using rtx3070s on old core i5 second gen motherboard and they work well for mining, the only issue I came across was trying to use Windows OS in the first place, driver issues here and there probably because the mobo is old but after moving to hive OS I felt at home instantly

I think this is a new way to get you to spend money on a new processor, motherboard and other components, and get a 10-20% increase in performance.
Otherwise, gamers will not buy expensive equipment.
4.0 pcie cannot yet be fully used in games.
