New to crypto. Basic generic security question.

If I transfer crypto from one exchange to another using a VPN, is there anyway my location can be tracked? Location, device used, wifi network name? Anything other than the false location of the VPN?

It depends on the quality of the VPN that you are using. A premium VPN will give you a real privacy and can hide your location but take note that this might flag your exchange account as compromised since you are accessing your account on different location to the address that you use during your registration. Your account might risk for account freeze and you will undergo for a further KYC verification to recover so take note that consequences by doing this method of yours to hide your location. You should not use CEX if you want a real privacy. Use DEX instead.

Thanks

To be more precise I want to transfer  my wife's crypto back to me without her knowledge. I bought it orginally and stupidly put it in her exchange. Now we are. Or together and I want it back.

I have all the access. I just don't want her or the exchange to know it was me if she finds out and tried to investigate.

Is it possible to find out the ISP or network name if the exchange investigate?

Might sound daft and I think they cannot but want to ask the experts 😆

Its not advisable to use VPN this way because in a blink of an eye your internet connection might fuck up for a second or two, that's enough time to reveal your exact identity, the whole VPN vibe will turn into a shitty situation fast, can you tell me why you want to do this type of transactions?.

You can do this and get away if you use a small exchange like CoinEX for example but if you do this with binance they will know, the thing with binance security is the first location you registered with must be the same as the one you keep log in from, once the location is different they will lock you out and second a verification code to your email, if they become even more suspicious they will ask for extra proof that you are the owner of that account, KYC verification and stuff.

That is likely technically going to be considered as stealing, since you’d be moving it without her consent and through her credentials. That is something for you to figure out though.

Besides the IP, the Exchange may save other information one is not aware of (i.e. browser, version, screen size, OS, and so forth). Those likely will not allow you to be pinpointed though on their own, but are rathermore complements.

VPNs may retain logs over a certain period of time, and law enforcement may require pertinent data to be revealed. That will, of course, depend on multiple factors, but it’s not a definite "no, you won’t get tracked".

What will probably be more revealing is that Exchanges tend to have KYC in place increasingly, so the "hacked" Exchange can simply investigate the real on-chain TX, and alongside the recipient's Exchange, derive de ID of the "hacker" (off-chain-> on-chain-> off-chain; or off-chain -> off-chain if it's the same Exchange).

Why don't you just ask your wife (or ex-wife) to give you back what you gave her? Everything you have written indicates that you want to do something that is not legal, regardless of the fact that you have access to the account where the cyrpto funds are.

I have all the access. I just don't want her or the exchange to know it was me if she finds out and tried to investigate.
Is it possible to find out the ISP or network name if the exchange investigate?

If you do what you want and your wife finds that the funds are missing, the suspicion will fall on you first because it is known that you had access. The fact that you would mask your IP address gives you the opportunity to deny your involvement, but most VPNs today keep logs of real IP addresses and will hand them over to the police in the event of a court order. The real question is what value we are talking about here, because no one will launch an investigation for a few hundred dollars.

When she will find out the money is missing and complain, they will investigate. No matter you have "all the access" and what's the story you have, it's still stealing now, and that's going to be investigated.
And, for example if the account has 2FA, it will not be difficult to narrow it down to you. But there can be plenty of small things that can give you in. As said, it would be more normal to ask nicely.

I won't do that. If it was a gift, no matter how your relationship ended, just let it go.
I don't know how much you sent but it's not worth it to take the risk in doing that.
On the other hand if only you and her had the access to the account, it would be very easy to accuse you so no point to hide behind the VPNs.

I would be using binance.

Can the ip be tracked directly to me through the ISP? Or just the location I am in? How else can I do this without my wife finding out

@Eldorado77

A lot of exchanges send an email at the time you withdraw your funds, and you need to click on that link to confirm.
If the platform your wife used has such a feature, you will need to also have access to her email.
Just something to think about since it hasn't be said.

I would be using binance.

If you use a weak VPN: yes.
The VPN must be used since day 1. There is the risk the platform blocks your account and funds if they believe the activity is suspicious. You then will have no choice to verify your identity with them and so exposing you.

Why don't you just ask your wife (or ex-wife) to give you back what you gave her?

Because they rarely obey when you divorce  Grin

If you are using Binance, there is certainly KYC on your end, which makes it fairly easy to track if you send the funds to yourself on Binance from your wife’s account, simply because you are already identifying a recipient address hosted in your name by an Exchange (thus linkable via the KYC).

It seems not a question of whether your move can be traced, but rathermore whether it will (depending on amounts, persuants, determination and so forth).

It depends if you passed kyc verification and sent your documents on those exchanges, and if you did that than it doesn't really matter if you used vpn or not.
Centralized exchanges are tracking all deposits and withdrawals and many of them cooperate with regulators and services like chainalysis, so they can make connection even if you didn't use any verification.
If you want to transfer coins without revealing all those information you should use decentralized exchanges like Bisq, and don't transfer coins directly form one exchange to another.

I would be using binance.
Using binance with vpn is terrible idea, and they can ban your account at any moment and seize all your coins.
btw they already know everything about you so there is no point of using vpn, and I would say it's even counterproductive because your fake IP is now permanently exposed.

Whatever the reason or background of the story, don't do it that way. Not only does it sound vile and sinister, but it is illegal as well. No matter whether the funds actually belong to you or not, you are still committing a crime by illegal appropriation of someone else's property, for which you can be held responsible. It can have serious legal implications, so you need to be careful.

Is it possible to find out the ISP or network name if the exchange investigate?

Might sound daft and I think they cannot but want to ask the experts 😆

They most definitely can. The exchange may forward the information to the legal authorities who can identify you through your ISP.

Binance of all exchanges? 😂😂 are you on weed or something? That's one is the most secured exchange of all, the way they handle things are top notch, you will have to face some pressure if you use a VPN with Binance because they will block you and tell you to identify yourself at one point and believe me you aren't going to like it.

Divorce is something I pray never to encounter. I don’t pick sides, but clearly you gave your wife the bitcoins willingly and put them in her custody. It’s lawfully here and trying to take them from her without her consent is stealing. You know what? I’m glad you’re using a centralized exchange Binance. It will be difficult for you to steal her bitcoins, Binance has a 2fa security. A email will be sent to her when you try to login her account notifying her of an attempted login from a strange device, also you need a code sent to her email and phone number before you can withdraw. I suggest you allow the court settle your divorce.

Yes. Device used can be tracked through your browser, things like screen size, GPU, CPU, OS, plugins can be pulled out. Network name cannot be seen. Location cannot be seen. Make sure you use a good VPN which you paid for.

The best you can do in this case is go for a residential proxy on top of the VPN. Try and copy your wife computer as best as you can. That's going over the top but better be safe than sorry.

Well this depends on the type of VPN you using, with a premium VPN I think you might be able to get away with it without her knowing about it, but why would you even want to do something like this. It a risky thing to do because when your network flip it might cast your work.

As said, since the list of people having access to all the resources of interest is probably small and since this is legally seen as theft, you'll probably get into trouble, no matter how good the VPN will hide some of your tracks.
(Also, as said, with your VPN, you may have a better chance to lock the account until she answers to some more KYC questions than actually withdrawing the funds.)
