Lionel Messi has signed an agreement worth more than $20 million to promote digital fan token company Socios.com.

Lionel Messi has signed an agreement worth more than $20 million to promote digital fan token company Socios.com, a source close to the deal told Reuters on Tuesday.

Messi becomes the latest global sports personality to enter the crypto world following NFL quarterback Tom Brady and NBA star LeBron James and the deal is part of a growing wave of tie-ups between crypto firms and soccer. Paris St Germain and Argentina forward Messi, whose move from Barcelona in August included a cryptocurrency payment, will be involved in a publicity and promotion campaign for Socios in the build-up to the Qatar World Cup, which starts in November.

The 'ambassador' deal for Messi does not include crypto payments and is a three-year agreement, the source said. Socios have signed deals, including creating tokens, for over 130 sports organisations including a number of top soccer clubs such as PSG, Barcelona, Juventus and Manchester City.

Fan tokens are a type of cryptocurrency that allow holders to vote on mostly minor decisions related to their clubs. The tokens are increasingly seen by clubs as a source of new revenue but have been criticised by some supporters groups who see their introduction as superficial participation that adds to the already growing costs of following their teams.

Brady last year took an undisclosed equity stake in crypto exchange platform FTX Trading Ltd and became an ambassador for the company. In January, James announced a multi-year partnership with Crypto.com, a company who recently signed a sponsorship deal with world soccer's governing body FIFA.

For those who does not believe in it, here is the link to same news on Lionel Messi webpage - https://messi.com/en/lionel-messi-joins-socios-com-as-global-brand-ambassador/.

One thing I dont understand is how will he help to promote this token? By wearing Socios t-shirt? Or this 3 year agreement allows Socios to use his name in promotional materials. I've seen many time that famous people become crypto project promoters, they appear once somewhere in projects t-shirt or make some pictures with projects banners behind them, and was probably it.

In situation with Messi, he has earned $25m for advertising Pepsi. We have seen his face on Pepsi bottles and cans, and tv commercials. What will we get for $20m from Socios? Anyone seen crypto commercials on TV? Or on shop shelves?

F*ck me.

Reputation gone after you promoted a shitty NFTs project. Damn boys, I don't understand anything about these why should need to take a deal while you're not know anything about NFTs. I bet Messi, don't even know about crypto-transaction ~LOL.

Rich people not enough money, as always.

Well it's good for Lionel Messi because endorsement means money, and its an addition to his fortune, Anyway the more important question is how big and rich is the firm Socios and how they can afford that huge talent fee imagine $20 million for a crypto fan token, Im just asking and it's not my purpose to discredit that so-called firm Im just interested about how popular and rich is that company.

Socios is not a "shitty NFT project" (at least for now). It is an app that allows you to buy football club tokens and other crypto, as well as play build-in games and etc. And it looks like it is not only football oriented, as they plan to include basketball, gaming, motorsport, ice hockey and American football tokens. The idea is not new, but crazy sports fans will definitely gonna buy these tokens, because they think they support their beloved teams with that.
