The FBI has issued warnings about a cryptocurrency scam running and defrauding US investors.

This cyber group is very successful that they were able to stole around $40++ million already. The authorities name 2: Yibit[1] and Supayos[2], Supay.

So the MO is that they will target their victims and then to install fake apps. This criminals going to the length as faking legitimate sites, using names, logos and other information. And then once you are in, they will ask you to deposit money obviously. And then when you wanted to withdraw, they will ask you to pay the taxes first. And even if you pay your alleged taxes, you can't withdraw any money.

https://www.ic3.gov/Media/News/2022/220718.pdf

So again, this is just a clear warning to everyone specially that we are in a recession. We really have to be very careful of our money and where we are going to invest.

Don't believed this too good to be true offers.

[1] Yibit was a legitimate cryptocurrency exchange, unfortunately they are closed since 2018
[2] Supay is a fraudulent company but they are using the name of a legit crypto exchange from Australia.

for a second I thought you made a typo and were supposed to put "Yobit" instead of "Yibit".

Quote
Following these deposits, 17 victims received an email stating they had to pay taxes on their investments
before withdrawing funds; all 4 victims could not withdraw funds through the app.
I'm a little confused about this part, did the 13 other victims able to withdraw or all of them were not able to withdraw but the 4 victims just got scammed for a lot more money than the 13 other victims because of paying the "taxes"?

I have a feeling that some of the victims are just decoys to show other possible victims that there are people "investing/depositing" on their website.

Those of us in this world know that there is a lot of scamming going on and I don't think this FBI warning is going to make much difference. Maybe it will appear in the mainstream media in the news or some information programs, but I don't think it's going to put the average user on high alert about these things.

They might as well include the crap site 1xBit while they are at it.

So do you think after the warning these scams are going to stop until and unless people become aware about it and stop investing their funds in these scam projects?

FBI issued these cyber warning now but there has been many scam alerts which people completely ignore and continue to invest with brain wash in these projects and then get rugged by them as you can see this one also worth million dollars.

How could they raise $40+ million so easily? The answer is people are fool enough to send their funds over to scammers in hope of earning more or greed and carelessness. This is only one example and you would find many more such scams in this crypto market but you need to be extra careful with your funds and don't invest blindly in any of those projects you see over the net.

Where were they during the ICO scams and frauds that were done through fake projects, were they not reading annual Chain Analysis report? If I can remember very well from their last report, scams carried out through cryptocurrency have reduced drastically and according to the data presented in their report, North Korea is the number one country who do these things.
Most of the crowdfunding and Investment today usually avoid US investors, they don't want to be associated with them, we have seen how they have been dragging Ripple for years,  so they should worry about how to take their country out of the recession

Their way of fraud is just simple for most of us here but when it comes to newbies that are new to crypto investment after reading successful stories of crypto investors, they might fall for it and as we saw the data given by the FBI, they already managed to get some huge amount of money from their victims. people can be dumb sometimes when it comes to money but what really matters when you first introduce some people to crypto, is providing the necessary things to read and avoid these frauds all around the crypto industry so that you won't get to blame whenever they fell for the scammer's trap.

The FBI has issued warnings about a cryptocurrency scam running and defrauding US investors.

I think the FBI needs to understand as well how the fiat system and government has failed in securing people's finances that has aggravated thier anger to seeking for an alternative in cryptocurrency, the government way or system is already off enough to gain the interest of the people back, no one want to risk his financial lives and privacy in ransom to the government, they are the ones to checkmate within their system, cryptocurrency maybe used for abuse but because many are shitcoins except for bitcoin.

Is this perhaps a task for Mulder And Scully? Cool

The US&A feds obviously have too much free time if they think $40 million is worth mentioning, given that the 2021 report says as much as $14 billion in various cryptocurrencies was stolen. If people were just a little smarter, these scammers wouldn't have even 10% of what they manage to steal today - but all data shows that it's easier to scam millions of people than to steal ice cream from a child...

The 14 billion is a worldwide number, the FBI doesn't care about that and the FBI can only publish numbers on proof of scams and investigations. Of course, they've managed to form more than only 28 and 4 victims! Those are actually the ones identified, the true number might be in the hundreds, but if the victim doesn't want to tell the world he is a victim, there is no crime being committed!

Just look at the scam section here, I'm willing to bet that less than 1% think of filing a complaint with the police, and scammers know that and become more aggressive. Speaking of 1xbit, how many people do you think have actually taken the step to get their money back?

I think the FBI needs to understand as well how the fiat system and government has failed in securing people's finances that has aggravated thier anger to seeking for an alternative in cryptocurrency, the government way or system is already off enough to gain the interest of the people back, no one want to risk his financial lives and privacy in ransom to the government, they are the ones to checkmate within their system, cryptocurrency maybe used for abuse but because many are shitcoins except for bitcoin.

So what you're trying to say is that if I end up divorcing I would have the perfect excuse to come to your house every night and rape your wife, right?

This is probably so it doesn't look like they said nothing about it. But how can this really help if they don't invest more in grassroot sensitization, For dating scams that have been on for a long time and the authorities have warned severally, has it resulted in putting a stop completely to dating scams? I do not think so. They have to do more than just verbal warnings but invest massively in grassroots sensitization to ensure that people always double-check the credibility of an investment sites especially cryptocurrency related that they about to get involved with. That can prove more effective than just issueing several verbal warning.

Even with FBI nothing can stop fully the scam. As if these guys were scared as hell to be limiting their modus everywhere. They just continue their activity and probably lie low for a while until the issue or social hype stay away from them again and once its clear then boom. Scam time again.

It's a good idea, though, that it has come to the point that they are finally putting out more effort to warn people that you can be scammed by "legitimate-looking" websites and scam tactics that can scam newbies in the cryptocurrency space. I'm still amazed that they are so much eager to scam people. I don't know how much they earn, but it must be profitable since it continues. But I do hope they be put to justice.

This scams have been on going for a long time even before the invention and creation of Crypto Currencies. Yes the FBI are doing good in every way to combat the most of funds but all of these are no where new. If humans can't take for themselves to detect what's good and bad then there will be further occasions of scams. How can you date someone you barely know online ? That is very ridiculous also entrusting your coins and seed phase to who you haven't met in reality ? I

This, honestly is not new, it's the same old strategy they've been using for a very long time now, why are the FBI sounding this warning now,?, is it that those that are being scammed don't know they are being scammed to warn others?.
I think the FBI just want their name on the news, maybe it's been a while since last they commented on anything or subject that is crypto related, so probably, they are using this as a means of letting us know that they are still there.

By the way, I saw this news earlier today though.

This scam will not stop because even if FBI warns people about possible scam to happen their are still greedy people who will got victimize on this type of scams because they always thought that government will just take away their opportunity to earn with them without thinking that government is saving them from huge harm.

They raise money easily because there are still people believes that they can earn huge money while sleeping if this chain will not be break and people will not learn about past scams happen for sure we will never see this type of scamming ends.

So the FBI is warning people concerning cryptocurrency scams. They're only like, what? 5 years late? Thanks Mr. policeman, very cool.

This is actually funny- I think they have been silent all this long but when cryptocurrencies are slowly becoming relevant, they show their faces, huh?

I just hope that their initiative will not be limited to only "warnings" issued by them. If they really see the effects of cryptocurrency scamming, I hope some sort of initiative and action would come from them to resolve this problem in this field. The more they try to avoid or to act like nothing, then nothing would happen in this space.

I actually thought I was going to be met by something new in this thread but, it is the same old stuff from my early days in cryptos. Haven't been around, you ought to know better what it is to trust or not in the cryptosphere. The closest way to being safe on a completely decentralised and anonymous way of running transactions is that you do it yourself and never giving out your funds to someone, be it an individual or corporate body you did come to meet on the web. It doesn't matter what reviews they've got as this could be easily the work of some shilling service, it doesn't even matter should they pay on your first investments (it's usually used to stimulate you into making huge deposits), just ensure your doing it yourself and always with funds you can afford to lose.

The FBI has been warning investors and victims about possible scams for years, in case you didn't know about this platform:
[ANN][ICO]HoweyCoins: the only BitcoinTalk-endorsed ICO - GUARANTEED PROFIT was created by the  Securities and Exchange Commission as a waning on gullible investors.
Going through that topic you will clearly see that there are people who are beyond salvation!

I just hope that their initiative will not be limited to only "warnings" issued by them. Just go to any court website and search for cases:
