Religion seen to have helped Nigeria in the area of language, provision of social amenities, education, promotion of science and technology, peace and reconcilation. However the impact of religion in a secular state seems to have played out negatively in Nigeria, as politics and religion are mixed in the attempt to gain political leverages and recognition by some corrupt and incompetent politicians that don't have the interest of the people at heart but greed and mischievous interest.
Sincerely speaking, I cannot condem anybody or Nigeria for being a religion motivated country but I condem politicization of religion where people consider religion in terms of making decision in leadership than looking at competency and charisma and this is the major reason why we keep on making mistakes in supporting politicians that will nail us to the wall instead making policies that will relief our pains enhance development in the country.

Our religions played an important role in the unity and development of the country but it is rather unfortunate that a place where we seek the face of God is turning into political avenue for campaign as some pastors and spiritual leaders goes to the extent of convincing their members to vote for a particular party when everyone is at liberty to choose any political parties of their choice without being influenced by the decisions of others or their spiritual Godfathers.

OP a similar topic have been created already about this, so Incase of some other time you make use of the search box to know if a similar topic have been created.
Here is the link of the initial topic that was created as regards to this matter Religion for help us but na we no wan face am the right way

Religion is suppose to foster peace and togetherness but the case here it is a different  case, religion has more bad than good in Nigeria, is as if people are not studying th holy book again may be there is another aspect of this religion that we need to be aware of, though in the early  time, religion was use to break barrier and make people believe that everybody deserves peace and we need to live in peace and harmony as one body, in the recent time you see different ideology, people of the same religion are fighting for know reason whatsoever, it is roo bad, sometime i feel that this religion is fake, what we need is to talk to God in which ever means we without attaching any grudges.

Religions can only foster peace when there is one religion. In a country where there are several religions, what do you expect? Each religion has made its followers believe that it is the best religion, and in that way, any other opposite religion has the wrong teaching. It is not meant to be a rivalry. If you look at the two religions in Nigeria, you will find out that there are similarities in some ways and that only the book of beliefs and different names make them different, but at the end, there is always one goal: to meet God or Allah.

It's works both the way it unites people brings peace and tops violence and also promotes brotherhood amongst people but if select the leaders only based on religion it creates corrupt leaders as they are assured of votes and also create sectarian strife to win votes and vote bank politics. I would say religion can used to promote peace and way of living but that shouldn't be considered while voting and electing leaders. Else country would never foster growth.

See to me, religion has been one of the major problem that we have in Nigeria, because the white that brought civilization to us never took it. This way we Nigerian are having problem, putting ourselves because of religion. The most Christian some people usually say that their own religion is the correct one and the other one saying the writing meanwhile the orders we also see the same thing, they are just arguing on what White has brought to us. Secondly, language difference Nigeria has more than 200 languages only in protocol we have more than 50 to 70 language. How do we communicate we are just confused Nigeria is not organized we just need to try and organize ourselves which is not easy it will be a difficult thing, but if we start from a step we can end up being right after 50  yes I am not saying we should be one religion or we should speak one language, but that must be a way that we can organize ourselves

That's a pretty informative article about the role of religion in Nigeria, and it's true that certain leaders have manipulated and divided people on the basis of religion instead of concentrating on the important problems that actually need to be solved. Well, bolstering the nation's system of religious and state separation is one potential remedy. This might entail changing the constitution to forbid using religion as a tool for political advantage and to explicitly define the place of religion in government. Furthermore, there should be more campaigns to raise awareness and educate people about the risks associated with combining politics and religion. Lastly, there must to be more emphasis placed on the part that religious authorities play in fostering tolerance and harmony throughout the nation.

I guess religion really help Nigeria in the past because their leaders then where not using it to play politics like the way all those politicians these days are using religion to play politics that will favour them to be in a particular position that will make he or she not to remember the religion that fight for them during the election.

The major problem Nigeria are facing right now is the problem of religion, you will see some christians that will struggle to build some companies in the country, they will never employ Muslim in that companies even though they have the requirements to get the Job and, likewise some Muslims that own companies too will never employ Christians that have the requirements in that Job which are the things that are affecting the country these days because our forefathers never allow such thing to take place in Nigeria.

Before now religion was a good thing in this country,  religion was the reason whereby education and civilisation was brought in this country but now the religion that we have is different,  people have turned religion into a different thing that they have bring politics and ethnicity into it. Right now I think religion is dividing us more, religion is bring more problems to the society. People are practicing religion differently.

Religion has never helped any country developed. As a nation before we see any meaningful development we have to do away with anything religion. But I can tell you for sure that this country cannot do away with religion sentiments when it comes to politics. Our politicians know this and they will continue to utilize it as a weapon against the masses. You know that the a large percentage of our population are illiterates who doesn't understands these tricks that the politicians are using. So before we can talk about removing religion from politics we have to address the issue of illiteracy and make quality education accessable to all and that one area our government will never touch. So my friend this issue is bigger than the way it appears from the surface. The only thing we can hope for is that irrespective of the religion that the political office holder is coming from, it should be people of impacable characters who can uphold national honors and foster developments.

The impact of religion in government can vary significantly depending on the cultural, historical, and political context of a country. Here are some of the key ways in which religion can influence government.such as legislation and policy, political parties and movements, social services and welfare.

Religion  improve self esteem and control and empathy ,reduce out-of-wedluck births ,crime, drug and alcohol addiction , health problems e.t.c

Religion has given various functions in our society such as giving a meaningful life, strengthen social unity and stability ,being a tool of social control and behavior , motivating people to work for positive social change , physical and mentally well-being .

Religion has built a concrete structure of formal education in Nigeria, which the country has not depart from, but as we can see today in Nigeria, religion has taken a different dimension, not the way it use to be where there is love and unity instead has become a tool of hatred and wickedness among same religion people mainly the Christians.
