Although learning a skill without education is actually good but going to school can actually take you to places and can also make your works popular, but in my country, to learn a skill is very essential as you can use it to survive just as you said.
It depends on your financial background and where you live, schooling fee can range from nothing to huge as f*uk depends on states, countries, public and private schooling but the concept is same where you get to gain knowledge in an environment filled with people from different lifestyle and that is the miniature of the actual society that itself is a biggest lesson.
But what you learn in school may not be enough, it is mandatory to gain skills and more skills to compete as I said earlier that will give the difference between someone with same degree and only few can be fit into it that extra skill will give you an edge for sure.
