Remember the MAIDSAFE (Massive Array of Inexpensive Disks Secure Access for Everyone) Network? It's a project that's been under development for quite some time. A token/crypto was launched under the name "Maidsafecoin" aiming to be used as "resource credits" for the new decentralized Internet. I'm surprised to see how many years have passed with no final product released. The project is still in beta/alpha stage (as far as I'm aware).

Is it safe to assume Maidsafe is vaporware? If that's the case, early investors (like me) would lose their money big time. With competing projects such as ZeroNet and IPFS, I think it's already too late for the project to make a difference.

What are your thoughts? Huh

It's still under active development, and the aim is to launch a working network in January 2025.

It has been a long process, but what they're aiming to offer is not the same as IPFS, ZeroNet, Storj, Arweave etc.

If they deliver, I expect it'll be pretty big... they're not there yet, but still working towards what I consider a very worthwhile goal.

It's rebranded recently to Autonomi.

They've made huge progress in the past year or so technically. A big, and controversial, recent development that aims to get things started more quickly is to temporarily use an ERC20 L2 token for network payments for storage at launch, ahead of their native token being sufficiently developed and battle tested to take on this role.

You can follow progress here: autonomi.com and forum.autonomi.community.

We just missed the beta phase bounties / rewards for running nodes, unfortunately, but can run some anyway to get familiar with them and see how much bandwidth etc they'll consume...

Just like the several other projects that today can still be considered just an Idea. They are still in the market though, Filecoin for example still has no real product but they exist because somebody is making money still. Maidsafe was one of the top coins when it was first launched. I remember them on top along with NEM can't find them on top 100. The crazier part is that they all have competitors, the same concept, and no product to show as well.

Now we are updated that it's rebranded as Autonomi.  If there are holders, they may have to migrate or swap their tokens.

Wow. Never thought they would get this far. Wasn't aware about the rebranding until now. Thanks for showing me that. If the developer team stands by the project's original principles, I can see it going new heights in the future. We need a truly-decentralized Internet that would make crypto (and our society) great again. Not even Ethereum has been able to de-centralize the web. Those so-called "dApps" are still centralized. Why? Because developers built them using centralized infrastructure. Everything from the domain name, to the server hosting the website are centralized.

A truly-decentralized Internet would have each component decentralized. Just like the name says. No middleman or third parties involved. Just P2P connections like ZeroNet does. The question is: Will Autonomi gather enough funding to sustain itself for generations? If it gathers the attention of mainstream investors, then yes, I believe so. The community will ultimately decide the fate of the project. Just my two sats Grin

It is shocking they are still active, good luck to the early investors.

Absolutely. This is what has kept me following Autonomi / Safe Network since 2014 or so.

It's still very much needed, nobody else has achieved it yet, and they're still trying to do it. I expect the first team to achieve a truly decentralised web will be a team who doesn't give up... and these guys certainly keep going!

The question is: Will Autonomi gather enough funding to sustain itself for generations?

If they can get this launched, they shouldn't need to. As it'll be fully decentralised & development can continue open source even if the team then dispanded. As long as an active community maintains it to adapt to market realities, it should continue indefinitely.

What are your thoughts? Huh

How is IPFS at data retension?

Is it, like Autonomi, pay once and when the starships are colonising the far far away galaxies every ships' holodeck will of course have access to your data (subject to however fast their FTL-or-not communication is by then of course aka latency)?

If so, how realistic are the starfleet/business models' proposals for how they'll pay for (aka provide) such forever-and-a-day storage?

Some kind of what you paid upfront earns forever through staking kind of deal or what?

Didn't hear about them previously, will take a look at them in the future.
Sounds like an interesting idea, to say the least.

Is ZeroNet really a competitor still?

Google set me on a trail that has brought me to what seems to be their "current status" yet it shows their roadmap ended in 2016...

On the other hand it does seem to work, so it seems feasible that using google docs to serve their roadmap is an antiquated technology, their actual current map residing, rather, on ZeroNet sites. ?

Not installing it quite yet to find out.

-MarkM-

EDIT: I think I followed their how it works button to get to that google doc.

EDIT2: re-reading the above I now wonder what gave me the impression it worked. Maybe it was just the weird way the scrolling worked in the google doc that unconsciously gave me an impression I was seeing the thing in action or something. So maybe I actually have no idea yet whether in fact it does actually work.

I haven't been keeping myself up to date with ZeroNet's development progress. If it's abandoned like you've said (based on the roadmap not being updated since 2016), then the project would be nothing but dead. A pity, because it had the potential to make the Internet a better place. Usually, truly-decentralized projects like these disappear due to lack of funding or mainstream interest/demand. There's another project called "Qortal" (formerly Qora) which aims to build a new decentralized Internet on top of the Blockchain. Development progress is somewhat slow, and the project isn't as popular as others. But at least, it's working (AFAIK).

Hopefully, Autonomi would make a difference after launch. Will it be able to de-centralize the web? Only time will tell. We need as many alternatives as possible so people can have true freedom and privacy. Giants like Facebook, Google, and Amazon have controlled the web for so long. It's time to put an end to this. I believe Autonomi (formerly known as the SAFE Network or Maidsafe) is the answer to all of our problems. Smiley
