I know this case very well and all activities from the beginning of these 2 people doing fraud are clearly recorded on discord, basically these two people deceived Gemini users by sending messages via email. But everything has been revealed because the bitcoins they stole were squandered to buy luxury cars, hotels and many more ridiculous actions of these 2 young men. Buying branded goods using bitcoin but without realising the address used has been monitored by the FBI.
In a way those thieves became victims of their own success, if they had stolen a small amount of money the FBI would have never got involved as it is the case of the thousands of small scams happening every day around the world, but they stole 230 million dollars and it is even likely that the person they stole for had strong connections with the agency, which caused for this case to be investigated thoroughly and this lead to their arrest.
