This is the news: https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2025/04/02/bitcoin-slides-1-as-goldman-picks-yen-over-btc-amid-tariff-fears

Please what kind of news is this? Comparing fiat with bitcoin or what? Only time will let us know that bitcoin and yen are not comparable.

It is very obvious that something like this is not what we should discuss as they are not comparable.

But the question is if yen will be an hedge against U.S. recession risks?

Quote
Goldman Sachs recommends the yen as a hedge against U.S. recession risks, citing its historical strength in risk-off environments.

This tariff war of a thing may not favour the United States.

If "No" then I would have to ignore his post as this could be another hater of bitcoin, and of course he doesn't know anything about bitcoin otherwise there wouldn't had been a day raising and drawing such comparison between Bitcoin and Yen.

I wouldn't pay too much attention into what Goldman says. They have so many analysts so there will be lots of different views & opinions coming out of there. Short term Bitcoin price movements shouldn’t bother us any way. Bitcoin is not a get rich scheme, it’s a don’t get poor slowly scheme.

in short: do as they do, not what they say.. is the best advise

firstly, when institution make public announcements of what the public should do. the institution already made their move ages ago. this is kind of one of those pump and dump moments, they want everyone else to pump the Yen markets now, so the institution can sell at the pump for profit. in short goldman sachs already bought yen and now want everyone else to pump it so goldman sachs can sell yen soon
they announce naive people should buy whilst they themselves are ready to sell

secondly
yes japan holds alot of US bonds. and if trump is going to cut the US treasury budget and find spare treasury cashflow to buy down the debt. this means buying back the bonds to cancel them and decrease the debt. so anyone with japanese deposits ALREADY, which are backed by US bonds already are going to get paid off/paid back. so kinda a good time to already have such deposits (emphasis already)
however if you dont already have these bonds backed financial assets, theres no benefit for you, so your too late for that advantage

again like i said goldman wants new people to buy into japans bond market to pump the bonds market price. so that if US tries to buy bonds back and cut the US national debt. goldman(already holder) benefits as they are also trying to push new investors to pump the bond market up to cost the US more to get the bonds back..
but no real advantage to any new investor entering this scheme.. thus its just a pump and dump act

thirdly
this "hedge" is not a long term hold thing for decades to come. its actually a short term advantage for those already holding/hedging. in the coming months-few years max

fourthly
the whole bond market hedging and Us debt buyback can affect the forex
for instance if you bought Yen in the last couple years your $100 would have got you ~150yen average. but when markets start moving your yen may end up not getting as many dollars back..
yes it could go the other way too EG back to 2008-2012 rates where by your 150 yen could get you $300

but like i said if institutions are going to be turning their yen back to dollars first(they get the best deal). the naive new investor will be later on the bad side of deals because institutions already made moves before them, flipping the market before new investors get their chance to sell

fifthly
the long term goal of goldman is not using yen as a hedge. so look at what else goldman is moving into, but not announcing what the public should do.
EG
goldman invested in japan years ago, expecting a payday in months to a few years
goldman invested in bitcoin in last few months, expecting long term hedging, including but also beyond the japan market drama
(goldman bought bitcoin but still publicly calling it a risk and not wanting the public to buy bitcoin.. yet)

in short: do as they do, not what they say.. is the best advise

@franky1, you are very right. I have seen the company say a lot bad about bitcoin in the past but they bought bitcoin.

When it says "slides 1%" you should already know what kind of garbage article it is Cheesy
Anybody who has ever looked at bitcoin charts knows that daily fluctuations below 5% aren't really analyzable because they don't need a reason. They can happen daily and very easily since the market is not that big.
Not to mention that the article is not exactly about bitcoin despite its title. It's the USD/JPY exchange rate that affects stuff that are traded against them since if the arbitrage between them would change price of everything. Meaning when USD/JPY rate changed, even if BTC/USD were to remain fixed the BTC/JPY would have to change.

Quote
But the question is if yen will be an hedge against U.S. recession risks?
I don't think so.
IMO Yen to dollar is like altcoins to bitcoin. Because Japan has bought a TON of US debt, if US economy dumps the Japanese economy would dump harder and there is a good chance that when USD tanks, JPY follows.
So best case scenario Yen is a super risky hedge and worse case scenario you'll lose more!

The short term games the corrupt banksters like JPM play are different though.

The news makes it confusing. I did not see anywhere Goldman Sachs compared bitcoin with yen. Goldman Sachs only 'recommends the yen as a hedge against U.S. recession risks, citing its historical strength in risk-off environments'. I do not know the reason yen is compared with bitcoin on the news which makes it confusing.

there are many investment assets that hedge against USD
GS is only announcing for outsiders to go for yen because the want a concentrated pump on the yen.. so GS can exit yen fast and at profit
they want outside investors to not invest in the many different things, and just concentrate a pump of the yen

because although they talk about possible long term bag holding of yen.. GS want to sell their own yen bag soon.. and leave people holding the bag of yen for years

its the same as most thing

when bitcoin for instance corrects after a ATH. institutions shout "crash" "chaos" "SELL SELL SELL"
when the actual reality is bitcoin is coming back to value, its discounted from a recent premium, which is usually a great time to think about buying, not selling

when bitcoin for instance is pumping near the ATH. institutions shout "FOMO" "on the up" "BUY BUY BUY"
when the actual reality is bitcoin is getting to premium, its overhyped compared to recent value, which is usually a worse time to think about buying, and a time people should be thinking of selling
..
the confusing part is that people think GS is giving good advise to naive traders. when actually GS is giving instruction wrote under the guise of long term good advice(but short term loss for investors) whilst its in reality going to result in short term profit for GS

..
we are in the pre-ATH season of bitcoin, they know investors want to accumulate bitcoin before end-of-year ATH hits.
so they want to divert people into buying yen so they can sell yen for their own movements into bitcoin

they compare bitcoin to yen as it shows their strategy of wanting to get out of yen and into bitcoin.. but flipped into the instruction to avoid bitcoin and buy yen to other investors

they do not want a bitcoin pump april-june (tariff drama season) so they dont want people buying bitcoin to pump bitcoin
they want a yen pump april-june so they can sell yen on the pump
they want cashflow to buy bitcoin while still cheap april-august before the BTC ATH hits

I DO NOT TRADE OR ACT AS ESCROW ON THIS FORUM EVER.

But the question is if yen will be an hedge against U.S. recession risks?

If you're trying to avoid the incoming inflation in the states that will affect the dollar, the Yen is actually a good hedge against inflation, but it's nowhere near bitcoin. There is always the chance that the trade war will affect Japan too, and if that happens, their currency might take a hit too, so what's the point in swapping dollars with yen?
With bitcoin, inflation in the US and other European and Asian countries increases the demand for bitcoin because more people will demand a hedge against inflation.

The government are the ones that is causing the inflation and they are the one that created fiat. Yen is one of the existing fiat. If you trace the price back, you will see how fiat are not hedge against inflation. Yen is not special among the fiats if discussing about inflation. What that are special are assets like gold, bitcoin and some other ones. But good to learn about the best time to invest in the assets.

But the question is if yen will be an hedge against U.S. recession risks?

Nothing impossible in it. If you look at the GDP of the countries, China is just behind the US. They are a production powerhouse and Chineese goods are available across the world. If you have ever visited African countries, you already know how much impact Chinese goods are making there. So I don't see a reason why Yen can't be used as a hedge for USD!

The tariff war is likely to bring negative impact on US economy. Trump is a businessman for sure but he is not the master of the world. Many countries have started to find alternatives. Goldman Sachs understand this dynamics.

As far as I know yen just keep going down and japan economic has reached stagnation.
they also be saying that yen gonna be hedge against inflation, because it did good in the past, meanwhile I don't even think current economy is the same as it was back then.
I'd bet on something like bitcoin than yen, goldman can do the opposite but I think even yen won't be spared.

Talking about a hedge to inflation, that can't be referred to any centralized commodity that is to be a manufacturing value which government has the audacity to manipulate. The USD, Yen or even Euro can't cope with this when inflation is activated.
Reason why gold has the potential of this resistance is because of it treasure not a centralized value and so also, bitcoin is not one. Which gives both treasures the potential to hedge inflation because as they resists regulations, so it also resists economy manipulations of the government.
The fact the China economy is fast growing ahead of the US economy does not literally mean it fiat (Yen) is a hedge against inflation. It is an error to have that insight because with a geopolitical economy sentiments, every hard regulatory global currencies can be diminished when taking to the stock of international market.

Well we should not be concern about anyone choosing yen(Fiat) over Bitcoin. Everyone has the opportunity to make their own decision and that should not even be a topic of conversation for us.
About the tarrif I also think this will just make other countries very bitter with the United States of America. We are already seeing that with Canada as they are ready to take this issue with the US to the limit.
I truly don't understand what trump is getting at with the tarrif war, I used to think it was good for the US citizen but looking at it critically a everyone is getting hurt.

Shame on them. I couldn't expect any worse from a "bankster". Banks like Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan prefer Fiat because they can manipulate it to their heart's content. But not Bitcoin. The few banks that are adding BTC to their balance sheet are hypocrites. They want to ride the wave just to make a lot of money. Not to use BTC seriously as a Fiat (or Gold) alternative. It is what it is.

Right now, Gold is soaring towards new ATHs. Therefore, banks will have even more reason to "ditch" BTC. Japan's economy is too tied with the US economy, so I don't think the YEN will serve as a hedge against the USD. Everything will go on "freefall" from now on because of the trade wars. I sure hope the effects will be short-lived, so the global economy could get right back on track. The future is unpredictable, so anything's possible.

they are just trying to push narrative that Yen is hedge against inflation of USD since Yen already tanked so much I'm sure someone been accumulating at the bottom.
but no thanks I'd pick BTC and even USD over yen anytime.

in the first place, why should a fiat is a hedge against inflation of another fiat, it should be gold or BTC that can be hedge against inflation.
if not for crazy tariff war we could be having it good, the opposite of current market sentiment.

I just think that obligation sighting the Yen has a hedge against inflation is due to the facilitation of the China's economy system which has justly been taking possessions over global economy ratio.
As the China economy grows, it replicates that the fiat is also gaining values again other fiats but that is not just enough to assume Yen has the potential value against inflation and not even the USD does but a volatile and decentralized assets like bitcoin and golds which can not be economically manipulated as the fiats or even the stock commodities in the economy market.
