Guys, I just dey think about this for a while… it is crazy that most Nigerian students leave university without ever really understanding Bitcoin and even having a glimpse of Digital Finance.. We hear about it everywhere, people making huge gains and even others losing, but in schools, it is like it doesn’t even exist. And Bitcoin is literally shaping the future of finance worldwide, yet we are still stuck in old school systems that teach things that would not 100% help students in the real world..
Now imagine this: Nigerian universities actually adding Bitcoin / Digital Finance, which ever way they choose to call it, as part of the curriculum. Not some small finance lecture that has no weight, but a full course.. A course that covers blockchain technology, wallets, security, identifying scams, understanding regulations, even how governments interact with Bitcoin and Blockchain. Students would not just leave with a degree, they would leave with practical financial literacy that actually prepares them for todays Nigeria economy…
The thing is, right now, the majority of students only hear about Bitcoin through social media, WhatsApp groups, or worse… scammers selling fake investment plan. That’s the reality of Bitcoin awareness in Nigeria. Most people know about it, but very few understand it. Imagine if universities took the lead: students could learn how to Buy and HODL responsibly, how to navigate exchanges, how to secure their investment, and how to understand market trends without falling for hype.
And it is not just about making money. This is about shaping a generation that can actually think critically about finance. Students fit learn how to evaluate Bitcoin, understand it real world use cases, and even innovate. And the thing is Nigeria has talented young ones, but without proper education on Bitcoin and blockchain, they are often limited, instead of building solutions on the knowledge that can be scaled globally..
Now, think about this from a societal angle. If universities start teaching Bitcoin, we can reduce the number of people falling for Ponzi schemes or fake crypto apps. Awareness is the first angle of defense. People would understand the risks, the mechanics, and the opportunities. Even small merchants, students, and startups could start experimenting..
I also was wondering… are Nigerian universities ready for this? Could the system handle it, or would it just be another useless course that students ignore? And more importantly, how do we start pushing for this change? Should students form clubs, should lecturers start introducing modules, or should we lobby the government to officially integrate blockchain education?
Honestly, I feel like this could be a game changer for Nigeria’s tech and financial space. The next generation could graduate not only knowing their field of study but also ready to participate in the global blockchain economy, something most Nigerian graduates are completely unaware of today..
Make I hear una thought on this..

You need to understand how University works. University is not like secondary school were you don't choose the field you are pursuing and can be taught things not in your line of profession. In the university you pick course like medicine, engineering, business, art and so on and are giving courses inline with your profession. Someone in medicine is not concerned with business administration so it's possible even if Bitcoin is added to the university scheme of work it will be more directed to the financial student. But Bitcoin doesn't need to be taught in the university before you can understand it. As an adult you have the opportunity to do research on topics you are interested in and that includes Bitcoin.

There is a part of this issue where we talk about our school curriculum in general being outdated and another part where we consider that the level of adoption of bitcoin has not gotten to the point where we can see schools visibly including it in her curriculum and teaching it in schools. We have courses like peace and conflict resolution, entrepreneurship, and English studies which are generally courses that are offered by all graduate because it is believed that those courses are essential for all undergraduate. blockchain technology and the study of bitcoin can be taught in schools which will help give all undergraduate proper knowledge about bitcoin but for that to become a reality, it is going to be very much dependent on the level of bitcoin adoption in the country.

I remember back in school, many engineering students would dismiss economics or entrepreneurship courses, saying they didn’t fit into their curriculum because they were “future engineers.” But with the way Nigeria’s economy keeps changing like a chameleon, it is becoming clear that economics and entrepreneurship are courses everyone needs to study.
When we talk about introducing Bitcoin education in our universities, what we really need is for the Minister of Education and the House of Representatives to pass a bill on it. My brother, it is very possible. In fact, it can be initiated in ICT and Finance departments, because Nigerian students and youths must be carried along with new technologies while gradually moving away from outdated methods. Bitcoin can even be a tool to help beat inflation.
Our leaders only need to be convinced. If they understand that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, Bitcoin education can be adopted in our schools; from secondary level all the way to universities.

Awareness is the first angle of defense. People would understand the risks, the mechanics, and the opportunities. Even small merchants, students, and startups could start experimenting.. Bitcoin indeed can be used by many if they understand how it's works and it's difference from ponzi schemes, because over time now, we know how many have been scammed all in the name of online opportunities and when it comes to digital opportunities, they don't want to hear anything being mentioned, because they don't want to be fallen a victim the second time, but having bitcoin education in schools starting from tertiary institutions will erase the fear and doubt on others to know that something new and different has come. Honestly, I feel like this could be a game changer for Nigeria’s tech and financial space. You know that the government are the one in charge of educational systems and this comprises of both the public and private institutions, if the academic regulatory bodies does not approves it, then the schools may not accept the teaching, all we should pray for is the government, for them to see it in a new dimension of trust and how the massive especially young adults could benefit from Bitcoin by learning it under their approval.

Firstly, in the streets of Nigeria, in the universities of Nigeria only few percentage of young people knows nothing about bitcoin. It’s the reality, because almost everyone you ask have little idea or knowledge to say about bitcoin even though the complex whole of bitcoin is not guaranteed that they may know it but they have a little idea of what bitcoin is! Bitcoin is not the future of finance, it is the current financial sector that good percentage of the world is thriving on (individuals, corporations, governments, institutions, Organizations etc). I would agree with you that the old curriculum of academics in Nigeria is not helpful no more yet that is not the reason why bitcoin is not studied and one thing you most know is that, the people you see in bitcoin today are mostly self thought and not educationally thought of bitcoin, we can say having to introduce cryptocurrency generally and its other cryptographic studies into the Academics will help but not basically bitcoin as a course in universities. Most of the places and universities with bitcoin as a course haven’t significantly impacted in the crypto world today!

Bitcoin is not the future of finance, it is the current financial sector that good percentage of the world is thriving on (individuals, corporations, governments, institutions, Organizations etc). Yes, a lot of young people in Nigerian universities have heard about Bitcoin, but hearing about it and truly understanding what it represents are two different things. Many just know it as that thing people trade for profit, without digging deeper into the principles behind it, decentralization, scarcity, censorship resistance, or even the role it plays as a hedge against inflation. So while awareness is high, comprehension is still very shallow. On the part of Bitcoin being the current financial sector, I would agree that it has already positioned itself as more than just a future thing. You see institutions adopting it, governments taking it seriously, and individuals stacking it quietly, not because it is some far off vision, but because it already plays a real role today. But at the same time, calling it the financial sector might be a bit too wide, since traditional finance still holds the bigger piece for now. I would rather say Bitcoin has forced its way into the financial conversation, and whether people like it or not, it is no longer just a future experiment, it is part of the present reality…

You made a valid point, I think those of them in the science faculty should at least have a topic on bitcoin and its functionality, that way it will be easy for some of them to relate to Bitcoin and probably pick the interest of adopting bitcoin if they find the need, but graduating entirely from the University without hearing or haven't been taught about bitcoin as a science graduate, doesn't sit too well with me. If a topic is being introduced to the students for them to know about Bitcoin, they could on their own research and get a better understanding.

I don't think universities can deliver this effectively right now. The truth is, many institutions in Nigeria still struggle to update their curriculum to match today’s realities. Even If Bitcoin is introduced without trained lecturers, adequate resources, and industry input, it could end up as another redundant course that students just cram and dump after exams and forget....

Yes it is true that most universities in Nigeria are still lagging behind when it comes to updating their curriculum, and throwing Bitcoin in there without proper preparation could just end up being another tick the box course students cram, write exams, and forget everything the next day. It would be a waste if not handled properly. But then I also feel, what if universities approach it differently? Instead of making it just a regular course, they could add Bitcoin and crypto education as an empowerment program, something practical, hands on, maybe optional workshops or clubs where students actually learn to buy, trade, and manage crypto responsibly. That way, it is less about passing exams and more about giving students real tools for financial independence in today’s world.

It’s not a bad idea if universities choose to incorporate the study of Bitcoin into their curriculum but I’m not sure it’s really necessary to be taught in the university since one can still learn it outside the university or by even making research. Even without going to the university one can still have the knowledge of bitcoin and invest.
Most students won’t really pick interest in it though if they want to make it a general course for everybody. E.g having a law student study bitcoin as a course. The student won’t pick interest and may still not gain the knowledge about it cause it’s not in line with his or her course of study. Even the lectures in schools today are more of elderly people and I’m not sure they are knowledgeable enough about bitcoin to be able to transfer that knowledge to students
