You know your second puzzle. I was thinking why 'never' is in italics. I stumbled upon something which ties in your whole story/book/monkey theme togather. I am sure you didn't planned it this way, I am just over thinking it. 

Your clue is about "reverse". So i tried to rearrange the word 'never', and got 'verne' as in Jules Verne. He is one of the pioneers of science fiction and he wrote a story on monkeys.
