Can I mine vertcion with the gui alpha scrypt miner using my r9 290x-- I setup to a pool but once connected it shows no shares accepted-- the hash rate number is fine at 850 khs

vertcoin is scrypt-n coin and you are mining it with scrypt settings which are wrong for the coin . You can follow this guide to mine vertcoin.
