Yeah most people only think of how it would profit them, not of what cause it's going towards. That's kind of a sad way of thinking, although some cool stuff has come out of it (games, etc) a lot of really good causes have come around and people automatically assume it's gonna be "take the money and run"

What else could I say?

Our doabitofgood.com fundraise is on right now:

http://startsomegood.com/doabitofgood

We also offer to let people show their support in any one of Bitcoin, Litecoin, Dogecoin, Feathercoin, Givecoin, and CleanWaterCoin via our "#bit4bit" matching donor fund if they want to:

https://doabitofgood.com/bit4bit

In our Crowdfunding campaign instead of the usual swag of tee-shirt and coffee mugs which just sap funds (and don't we have enough of them already??) -- we're offering supporters various reward levels of Givecoins so that they can help us bring about what we hope will become a "virtuous cycle" in charitable giving.

I spent a ton of time looking around for a well managed BTC based donor site, but they all seem like either "abandoned" or just start-up/proof of concept.

Kickstarter rejected us right away.  StartSomeGood seems to be very "pro-social" so that's where we thought we'd get a good audience.

It's a great idea to fund raise with bitcoin and now that the IRS has figured out how to tax it; we should be able to write off our
charitable donations too ;-)

There 'used' to be more truth in forums than anywhere else.  Twitter:  @cryptobitchicks  Spock: "I am expressing multiple attitudes simultaneously. To which are you referring?"  INTJ-A

maybe you can help me in my extreme circumstances get my life restarted after suffering from traumatic ptsd, panic and anxiety and being unable to leave the house, work or do anything for the past several years. that'd be nice, but i don't think too many people would believe my story considering "panic and anxiety disorder" rates pretty low in things people care about and isn't well recognized, and has a stigma against it when it comes to illness. it's pretty sad, i suffer day in and out, i've lost my health care, and i'm living with family but i'd really like to come back into the world and do something on my own, get my own place and start contributing to society again. unfortunately because of naysayers people would only think i'm trolling to get money

Charitable donations would be a great thing if you have bitcoin that has significantly appreciated and you would donate to charity anyway and you have other, additional income.

My understanding of the tax law regarding donating appreciated property is that you can take a deduction for the full value of the asset and do not pay any taxes on the gains that you had.

For example:
Suppose you bought one bitcoin for $10
Today that same bitcoin is worth $600
If you were to sell that bitcoin on coinbase you would owe taxes on the $590 in profits
If you were to donate that bitcoin to the redcross then you would take a $600 deduction on the value of the coin and would not owe anything for the gain
