If people are holding, then the BTC economy doesn't grow as fast. But if you mine with it and spend existing BTC for mining hardware, then that starts a new economic area, ie shops that carry mining equipment.

Using it for anything at all helps create liquidity. Using it for services is often better than items for this as well since it allows people to choose when to sell (as opposed to selling as soon as they get the coins in order to pay for new stock).
