Do you guys think this has any short term effect? The non-bitcoin public might be disturbed once again for a short while. Can't imagine, however, that this has any long term effect, except in case China is buying the trademark Wink

Well I didn't knew that Mt.Gox own a word "Bitcoin".

Isn't that Satoshi Nakamoto who should be an owner or this?

And there should be no owner at all! Instead of Satoshi - but he gave it to the people, and now people are trying to sell it?

This is amazing and very bad in my opinion.

Quote from: Daliah Saper
“It’s a generic term — no one can own ‘shirt’ for shirts or ‘watch’ for watch. Bitcoin is the only way that people can reference bitcoin without talking about what it is.”

I think that's ^ ^ the point.

AFAIK Gox registered "bitcoin" so that no profit oriented company could misuse the word. Now, due the insolvency, to sell the trademark is obligatory... thanks Mr. Karpeles! Tongue

The trademark was bought by the Gox parent company for the good of mankind rather than financial gain. I can't really see how anyone could make money out of a term which has become so generic but I'm sure someone will try to find a way.

I can imagine someone purchasing the trademark, simply to gain settlements from reinforcing ownership that was infringed by companies associated with bitcoin. Otherwise, hm, maybe selling usage rights to companies etc.

Goodwill I guess from being associated with the name and never needing to worry about a legal case on the name itself.
That said this assumes someone tries to monopolize it which would likely fail.

what value would a company gain by owning this trademark?

Maybe just the power to sue others who infringe and braggin' rights of owning the trademark

Just thought of an application, sue the companies who scam their users and use Bitcoin as a trademark
(Thinking about Mtgox with that example he-he)

Worth $0 and a PR liability to own, really. Invalid trademark shouldn't have been approved, but nobody knew what the Hell a bitcoin was back then. You can't trademark gold and you can't trademark bitcoin. It's ridiculous, and no judge where the defense was present (and maybe even if not) would favor the persecutor.

This is fun...

The only thing that makes bitcoin unit price stand out among other cryptos, is the known trademark. Now the corporate folks will buy it, and will integrate it to their monetary services, that doesn't have anything to do with the original concept. This is similar pattern with napster.

I'm waiting for the time when people will smarten up and see that bitcoin isn't special when compared to other cryptos. That the support services can support other forked cryptos with the same technology, and "the network effect" is nothing but hype and marketing, that only applies to products and services, like carbonated soft-drinks or social networking sites, because their customers are apathetic and don't care about the actual quality of the product. Monetary services don't work like this.

I think reason is more the second one than a 1st one but all this attempt will end up as a fiasco.
I hope.

BTC    <- it is not a trademark! Smiley
