Which original client are you using?

Bitcoin-Qt?
Bitcoin Core?
Armory?
Electrum?
MultiBit?
Blockchain.info?

I'm going to assume you are either using Bitcoin-Qt or Bitcoin Core.

In that case, which version of the client are you using?

I'm going to assume you are using the most recent version (0.9.2.1)

If my assumptions are true:

Use the "Receive" tab (since you want an address so that you can "receive" bitcoins).

Label the address with the "Label" field so you know what you created it for.
Click the "Request payment" button.

The wallet will create a bitcoin address for you.

Click the "Copy Address" button.

That should place the bitcoin address in your Operating System's clipboard.

Go to your email, or txt messaging program, or text box in your web browser, or whatever system you are using to send your address to the bitcoin sender.

Press the [CTRL] and [P] keys on your keyboard if you are using Windows (or the [Command] and [P] keys if you are using an Apple computer).  This should paste the address for you.

Double check that the address from Bitcoin Core is the same as the address that you just paste.
