Ps: There's no clear response from RBI as well so I doubt they will accept bitcoins.

I heard they were looking into it but since RBI has cautioned the users about bitcoins they have pulled back. However, since the founders are techies from IIT I guess it will surely come around in their minds, specially since apple has also started accepting bitcoins for gaining revenue in app store if the developer consents to accept bitcoin.

I too have my own application by the name of "Indian Bare Acts Pack" which is an application used widely across India by the lawyers. In the next update at my application I will start accepting bitcoins as payment, if Indian counterpart of Apple is allowing that.

Lets hope flipkart also start the same soon.

If Flipkart accepts Bitcoin then many other Indian online stores might follow the same course and it would be great step towards BTC adoption in India.

This made me remember
http://cis-india.org/internet-governance/bitcoin-legal-regulation-india

As price is an essential element of a contract of sale, barter is ruled out from a transaction of sale of goods. This means that any transaction whereby payment is made in Bitcoins would come within the category of a barter transaction, for example if flipkart.com starts accepting payment in Bitcoin then the transaction of paying for a pair of shoes through Bitcoin would infact be a barter transaction and would not be governed by the Sale of Goods Act.

This is when Bitcoin is considered as a movable property or goods. Unless and until  a clear mandate comes from Govt on how bitcoin will be treated as it will be difficult for any e-commerce sites to completely accept bitcoin without getting in to legal tangles. But since there is no such mandate from Govt, they can atleast play safe within the boundary of current laws.

Best thing would be to start with the smaller stores which are looking to do something to set them apart. Once it gets some visibilty the bigger ones will follow as they won't like to be left behind. Would be a better strategy rather than going for Flipkart directly.

Having said that, anyone got a voucher? I am trying to buy Alcatel One Touch Idol X Smiley

Is the bitcoin user base wide enough in India to justify the investment that is required to start accepting bitcoins?
It probably would be nice publicity for a company. Flipkart probably doesn't need that publicity.

Flipkart wants all types of publicity. They are even letting their site go down for the last 4-5days to to convince others there's somuch demand for a particular phone which has been launched. I am not convinced that a 500M funded company can't hold that moderate traffic. Sorry but they will have to prove if it is otherwise.

Now, on the other hand, if they want to stay geekish and keep their smart-young customer base interested, they can support BTC and make a real change. Geekdom isn't just mean arranging a few hacknights/n.
