Making queries on altcoin blockchains, is running a daemon neccesary?

I would like to have my code call into the blockchains of various altcoins and or all of them, must I run many hundreds of daemons?

You could call online block explorers. I wouldn't hardcode their
addresses into the source, better to have separate list in the
data directory and some kind of update mechanism.
