For those familiar with boinc, this would be a premium BOINC.
1. This is not "just like" gridcoin.
2. I can't develop this. I can only help with blue sky and testing software and connecting the dots. I can compile and other lower level developer stuff - im good at finding bugs and telling you which dependencies are a pain to find!! So I'm really looking for developers.
3. I call this [Organizational] because I can't develop and I'm hoping to get a bunch of people together to make this happen.
Background / Rationale / The Problem
There's a lot of big data in science these days. There are huge computational tasks. Existing distributed computing projects have job queues from here to the moon.
Cryptocurrency mining networks are distributed supercomputers
Creating actual demand for cryptocurrency usage is in all of our best interests, whether or not your a Monero believer, a DASH believer, a litecoin believer, etc.
The Service / User-facing side
Premium on-demand cloud computing. A user has a data set they need crunched - for instance, I need to predict the structure of a protein. I enter the sequence of the protein. I enter how much I will pay for the service (50 XMR). Thus, a job instance has entered the Premium Distributed Computing Network (PDCN)
The client facing side - we, the miners
On the mining rigs, the miners install a daemon that controls the rigs. The steady state is to keep on mining whatever currency you love. The PDCN daemon listens to the PDCN and notices the job I posted above. Based on the miner operator parameters, the daemon switches the hardware (or some of the hardware) to the PDCN job. When the job is complete, the miner gets paid for the job, and then the miner resumes mining their favorite currency.
---------
Simple in concept, though I have no idea how complex in application. One major hurdle is that the PDCN will require a front-facing website / server in order for users to submit jobs, though I imagine it would be possible to organize as a non-profit so that we could use existing open-source distributed computing applications, such as those within the BOINC network, and some % could be shaved off the price of service for maintenance of the servers. We could probably use google cloud for that front facing / centralized component.
What this does - 1. opens up addition revenue streams for miners. 2. Exposes a whole new market to the cryptocurrency economy. Yes - an actual reason for people (scientists, companies) to buy cryptocurrencies. Whats that mean? Actual market demand. Whats that mean? The value of your bag goes up.
