What's wrong with "necromancing" an old thread?

I was searching to see if there was already a thread established to post jokes in and found this old thread, but when I went to post in there I got a warning in red letters.

Warning: this topic has not been posted in for at least 120 days.
Unless you're sure you want to reply, please consider starting a new topic.

Personally, I hate it when I find half a dozen threads made all on the same topic and thought "necromancing" an old thread would actually be encouraged rather than discouraged. I, myself, have even discouraged people on several occasions from making new threads about topics that already exist, yet now I find a warning that contradicts what seems to me a common sense approach to avoiding redundancy and clutter.

Wouldn't it be preferable to post in an already established thread, rather than making multiple threads on the same subject?

I reported a user, who was necro-bumping multiple threads in the legal section, but seems like his posts were okay.

I recently had a brain tumor removed and I had my right side Balance hearing mechanics removed, I am applying for disability until i recover.
Filling out the form I came across the question "Do you own any bitcoin or cryptocurrency"

It's just disgusting. The government has become so invasive of our privacy that it makes me throw up.
It's none of their fucking business.

I think its just disgusting that they want to tax everything, they have way too much money and want even more.
Now that the capital controls start to kick in the EU, they are desperate to loot more money from us, until their ponzi scheme collapses.

I wouldn't consider the two examples you posted to be "necro-bumping".  To me, it's a previous post that is at least 1-2 years old.

Fair enough. They were replies to old topics which hadn't seen any activity for months.
Since this was repeated on multiple threads in the legal section, I thought they would fall under this

.... you read the subject line, maybe the op, pound out a quick response, move onto the next thread, rinse and repeat

The "don't necro post" rule is more in place for general common sense reasons. Use your best judgement, you can post in old threads without it being against the rules as long as your post is still relevant. What we don't want people doing is going into 3 year old sales threads, or GPU mining discussions and posting, "Hey do you still have this?" Or, "Why would you bother mining with your GPU, ASICs have made them obsolete" etc. The warning is there to let you know that the topic is old and any information might be outdate or that the thread may have been concluded long ago. If its a jokes thread, there probably isn't an issue with necro posting in it.

That wording may be a bit too lax. The next person to post wouldn't get that warning and may not see that the reason people are offering btc for $2 each is because the thread is years old. And so begins the circle jerk of wtf

It's because there have been so many spammers lately literally picking threads a year old or more in order to bump them specifically so they can pad their post count and the joke is a bunch of people who should know better would jump in and restart the conversation again. Under normal cirumstances I wouldn't have too much of a problem with it but like I said, the spam got that bad I can see why the mods put a limit in on that, nothing wrong with just making another thread about it if you're genuine about wanting to talk about it, it just makes you look suspicious if you're looking to bump old threads with crappy replies.

The complaints about getting banned for spamming have gotten so bad for instance that I've pretty much said my peace on the matter for one of them and left the others alone, pretty much because if I responded to all these tossers who I probably reported myself then I'll end up getting banned for spamming.

I have seen people discussing old news articles which were like 2-3 years old and it makes no sense discussing such old stuff unless they want to update a similar news story. There's nothing wrong in bumping an old thread if you want to give an update or a useful opinion but users just saying "Bump, the OP is missing." is just senseless.

When you see those type of posts you should report them to moderators.So at the end it is not against the forum rules necromancing an old thread?
