WOW, for all the brains on this board (enough to get a man to Jupiter and back for gods sake) its amazing how many have lost money due to the lack of common sense.

I have never lost a coin because I don't trust any BTC site, pool or some guy on a forum one bit, I don't care how long they have been around. My BTC or money is in an out as fast as it can be and no pools keep more than .3 of my coins when mining and never, NEVER EVER, any FIAT.

I LMAO every single time I see a site vanish with coins. If you cant afford to lose it without crying about it AT ALL don't leave it under some sites control.

STOP LEAVING BTC AND MONEY AT BTC SITES CLUELESS IDIOTS. STOP IT! NOW!

There are cons of many sorts, but not everyone is running a game. Sometimes the temptation to abscond with large funds becomes too great and they break bad. You make a good point about not trusting anyone, even MtGox. I fully expect (but not hope) that they will be hacked again someday.
