I'm the original owner of an Apple iPhone 3G that's been retired since the day iPhone4 came out. The ringer volume switches are worn off so you have to use your thumbnail to turn the volume up and down but it still works just fine. I cracked the screen and replaced it just a week before I retired it so the touchscreen is brand spankin' new. It's in good working condition.
