Please go here: https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet
Please read all the different wallets, their positives and negatives and see which one works for you.

It all depends on how many you bitcoins you have and whether you will store them away or use on daily basis.

Please educated yourself fully before doing anything you may regret later.
Please experiment with sending transactions with small amounts.

For someone completely new to bitcoin,
I would suggest something like Mycelium,
but I have never used it, but heard good things.

Edit: Please only use Online Wallets for small amounts of bitcoin.

I support a decentralized & unregulatable ledger first, with safe scaling over time.
Request a signed message if you are associating with anyone claiming to be me.

Cold wallet is the best, store your bitcoin for long term, use hardware wallet like Trezor(you need buy a hardware) or use paper wallet(it's cheap) but you need save the paper wallet carefully because it's paper.

or i recommend Electrum, desktop wallet which you don't need to download the data, have a lot features for the security too.
or use Bitcoin Core wallet for support the nodes.

I will suggest you coinbase mate. I am user of coinbase since more two years and nothing bad happen never on it. For more with coinbase you will not to pay fees when sending bitcoin because those fees are paid from coinbase. So you save the money of the transactions. Coinbase have millions of users from all over the world so its safe at maximum.

My experience with the exchanger is don't store big amount, especially your main balance on exchanger, someday they will gone with your coins, don't forget Mt.Gox, Mintpal. i'm not recommended use the exchanger for store your all amount.

Depends on your preferences.

Do you want to be a node and keep a record of the whole block chain since the genesis block? If yes, then go and choose Bitcoin Core.

Are you the type of person that chooses lightweight programs but the functionality still remains? If yes, then go choose SPV wallets like Mycellium, Electrum or Multibit.

Do you have a fat stash that you should keep safe from any attacks of some sort? If yes, go to bitaddress.org, run it offline, generate your keys, print your wallet and keep it safe.

Lastly, don't use online wallets.

It definitely depends on the purpose of user but in general most of the people prefer either blockchain which is online wallet or bitcoin core which is desktop wallet.

Electrum offline wallet is recommended for you mate, it has safe wallet encryption and also recoverable wallet. Don't need to worry when your data gets lost, offline wallet because you're wallet become more safer than online, prob online wallets are useful so you can access your wallet anywhere but its not recommended because when the online wallet databases gets corrupted, you're wallet might still get lost unless you know the private key.
