Hi guys,

I'm new to the topic of crypto-currencies and I've been reading quite a bit over the last few days and several questions came up of which the most important is the aforementioned one: What is possible with an Asrock G31m-gs, a Intel E5200 Dual Core, running at 2.3 Ghz, and a Geforce 9400gt.

- Is the geforce 9400gt capable of mining ANYTHING?
--> not only do I want to know, whether it's actually possible, but also which (alt-)coin would make sense mining.

I kinda liked Ethereum and I'm somehow favoring Litecoin (although, there is no reason for that, maybe gut feeling or sth. like that) I also read about Quark-based coins, that would be mineable with nvidia-chips, can any1 hint me further Information?

As I'm a student, and not one of those rich brags, but one of those who have to work during their studies, I'm on a budget, so I figured that I may use this crap-PC for fun, knowledge and a lil mining, until I have saved enough for buying proper hardware (was thinking about Nvidia's Geforce 750ti)
Is this device a  good choice?
Is there a piece of hardware more capable for ~ the same amount of money(~140€ in my country)
As the motherboard is not that important, I could use the AsRock G31m-gs a lilttle while, correct?

I'm not hoping to become rich via mining (why would I be so naive?), certainly not, with what is affordable for me. I've read about so called hillbilly rigs, that enable you to mine 40$ a day (http://www.cryptobadger.com/2013/04/build-a-litecoin-mining-rig-hardware/), I guess that with increased difficulty and ASICs Litecoin-Mining ~40$/day is over? (the article is over 2 yrs old)) No, I don't expect to make 40$/day. I was thinking about partly financing (maybe 1/30 or so) the first rig via crap-PC-mining (if possible. I somehow doubt that :-D)

ASICs: With my limited budget I think it'd be the best idea to mine a coin that is not heavily mined with ASICs, yet.
Any hints for good coins that probably will be around for a while?

I have a Litecoin-wallet and could easily open others, I also have already made 0.02 LTCs (yeah ... Faucets... annoying stuff ...)

A little more info on the machine:
Currently running Linux Mageia 5 up to date.
4GB ram
600W PSU, efficiency ~ 85%.
Intel E5200
Geforce 9400 GT

The Machine should if possible mine on linux, but it can run win 7, too.

I hope this post is not to confusing and I'm not totally off ... :-D
It's kinda complicated topic with lots of outdated information out there ...

I hope you don't mind asking beginner's questions (if not dumb questions)

best wishes,
karanda

It is absolutely over. It is over for LTC and pretty much never started for any other currency. You cannot just make income by forgetting there the miner, you'll have to invest time and effort into trading. I would be happy if I could make 4$ a day but I couldn't.

Upgrade, if you want, for other reasons. I personally find the 750ti a bit expensive but considering the alternatives that's probably the best you can get. (  Embarrassed )

Before trading, I need coins ... :-D

Ethereum seems quite ok, and it's as far as I can tell not around for too long. (I think the oldest post about gpu-mining I found is from May ...)
However, the upgrade will take at least til christmas, as I promised my girlfriend a vacation before I spend money on something "useless" as she puts it :-D

As of LTC mining you aren't see any coins come from anything not an asic and they are expensive.
I realized that een before opening this thread. I simply liked the coin :-D I'm looking for alternatives that are mineable via gpu, that's why I mentioned ethereum and quark-based coins.

With regards to the latter one: What's so special about these?

Maybe I'll change whatever coin I mine into LTC and trade with that...

(After 3 days, I already hate faucets :-/ )

thanks again for your time&answers :-)
