The blockhain was created by satoshi. Anyone can download the blockhain and anything can be added to it through bitcoin transactions. It is entirely public, so anyone can do whatever they want with the blockhain.

Don't worry, no question is silly or idiotic Smiley

The blockchain is a public ledger that anybody can have. So when you say 'who created the blockchain?' You probably misunderstand. For example, the people that own blockchain.info created their blockchain etc! Smiley

And since the blockchain is a public ledger, and anybody can have a copy etc, it would be funny to charge commissions to use the blockchain! Smiley Miners get commissions though, because they put in a lot of work to validate blocks and make sure the transactions added are legit.

Please don't make up nonsense answers to questions if you don't know what you're talking about.  Newbies are likely to think you are stating actual facts and believe you. Then they'll repeat your nonsense on other threads, and before long there will be a huge number of people who believe and repeat a whole lot of nonsense.

Miners do not get any commissions at all.

Miners receive any transaction fees that the transaction sender voluntarily pays when they send the transaction.
Miners receive a block subsidy of new bitcoins as a way to release the currency into the system in a reasonably fair way.
Miners can receive additional fees from the transaction recipient (or anyone else) if the transaction recipient (or someone else) contacts the miner and offers to pay for confirmation of the transaction.

The miners do NOT "put in a lot of work to validate blocks", nor do they put in a lot of work to "make sure the transactions added are legit".  They do the exact same amount of work as every other full node to validate a block and make sure the transactions added are legit (and the only thing full nodes get for their effort is the ability to participate in enforcing the consensus rules).

Miners put in a lot of resources as a "proof-of-work" to reach a consensus on the order of transactions.

Sure, confuse him with your technical bullshit. I expressed what he needs to know in the simplest terms I could muster.

I agree saying miners get commissions could be misunderstood. It was probably a wrong way to put it. But I was talking about block-rewards etc. And yes, miners do both the things I mentioned. When I say work, I mean the computation power.

First you say I'm wrong:
Quote
The miners do NOT "put in a lot of work to validate blocks", nor do they put in a lot of work to "make sure the transactions added are legit".
Then you say exactly what I said:
Quote
validate a block and make sure the transactions added are legit

Lol.

Be nice, and don't be too technical to newbies. Because the question was asked to understand, not to get frustrated and give up or something.

- snip -

Sure, confuse him with your technical bullshit. I expressed what he needs to know in the simplest terms I could muster.

This thread was in the "Development & Technical Discussion" sub-forum when I replied to it.  It has since been moved to the "Beginner & Help" sub-forum, but while in the Development & Technical Discussion sub-forum, a technical answer is entirely appropriate and not "bullshit".

I agree saying miners get commissions could be misunderstood. It was probably a wrong way to put it. But I was talking about block-rewards etc. And yes, miners do both the things I mentioned. When I say work, I mean the computation power.

The large amount of computation power that a miner does has NOTHING to do with "validating blocks" or "making sure the transactions added are legit" (which are both the things you mentioned).  All it does is form a consensus on transaction ordering.

First you say I'm wrong:
Quote
The miners do NOT "put in a lot of work to validate blocks", nor do they put in a lot of work to "make sure the transactions added are legit".
Then you say exactly what I said:
Quote
validate a block and make sure the transactions added are legit

Lol.

Work on your reading comprehension.

You say that they "get commissions though, because they put in a lot of work to ...".

I say that they do not "put in a lot of work to ..."  Then I point out that they put in the exact same amount of work as EVERY OTHER FULL NODE.  You know, those nodes that relay transactions, but that don't do any mining.  Those nodes that don't receive "commisions" or "transaction fees", or "block subsidies" or "block rewards", etc.  The work to validate a block or make sure a transaction is legit is minimal and takes a few microseconds.

Clearly, I do not say exactly what you said.

Be nice, and don't be too technical to newbies.

If a newbie is going to post in the "technical discussion" sub-forum, then the newbie should expect a technical answer.  If they want a Beginner answer, then should post in the Beginner sub-forum.

Because the question was asked to understand, not to get frustrated and give up or something.

Talking about commissions and claiming that the "work" that a miner gets paid to do involves validating blocks and making sure transactions are legit, doesn't help a newbie understand.  It helps them mis-understand and results in them spreading that mis-understanding.  Furthermore, it also does absolutely NOTHING to help the OP, who is asking about paying the owner of some intellectual property for the right to use that intellectual property. So, if your intent was to help, then you only created additional confusion by talking about "commissions" (which the OP was asking about in terms of paying for the right to use someone else's property) and claiming that the miners received them.

In addition to above replies - not every blockchain has to be related to Bitcoin. There are hundreds of altcoins with their own blockchains, and there many big players working on developing their own "blockchain technology" to suit their needs.

"Blockchain tech" has lately become a popular buzz word and could mean completely different things.

In addition to above replies - not every blockchain has to be related to Bitcoin.
Many companies now using term blockchain technology to describe over 20 years old distributed database Cheesy.
They are just stupid, same thing was with cloud technology which is just sharing servers which was invented long ago.

Just fancy words. Real blockchain is bitcoin blockchain because its backed up by huge mining power. Blockchain without huge mining power (distributed one) is just a database.

There is the Bitcoin blockchain and the service called blockchain.info, two entirely different things. You are emailing the service called blockchain.info which is completely different from the bitcoin blockchain.

A lot of newbies make that mistake and it is very problematic that they do.

I suggest using a desktop wallet not an online one. I recommend that you use Electrum.

Satoshi Nakamoto dissapeared after he created Bitcoin and did not file patents on his technology. It is now public domain and for that reason nobody needs to pay anything to use it. Nothing is stopping these companies from trying to patent many parts of the technology.

I think PayPal are trying to patent the virtual wallet part of it, and if successful other companies would have to pay them to host virtual wallet services. The chances of them being successful, with all other companies being in the same scene long before them, will make things very difficult.
