Once you own and control a big enough amount of something, you can manipulate the market by cheating the function of 'supply and demand'. No coin will go anywhere without the big players allowing it to do so.

The blockchains speaks for themselves: (provided by bitinfocharts.com)

It should be noted that Dash looks comparatively better but thats only because of the masternode incentive to split into multiple wallets.

Some interesting quotes from early Dash thread:

If we divided all the money in the world equally, in a short time the rich would be rich again, and the poor would be poor. Just the nature of how things work.

The scientific mathematical formula is called a Pareto distribution, and it turns up in a lot of statistics:

http://betterexplained.com/articles/understanding-the-pareto-principle-the-8020-rule/
(easy version)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pareto_distribution
(hard version)

And, if anyone cares, I checked the numbers for Nxt:
1-10 own 22.4%, 1-100 own 67.9% 1-500 own 89% (and,yeah, I know, it should be 1-1000, but I have only the top 500 at hand right now)
