Hi

I have over 70 receiving addresses in my multibit classic client, wallet. I have been using multibit since 2013 and never ran into this problem before.

A client paid me 2.2 btc. I copy pasted one of my receiving addresses from my multibit client (random one, since I have over 70, i always give random address from my list). So i copy pasted it fine to him.

20 minutes later he had informed me that he paid so i checked my multibit client and nothing there. I am used to blockchain delays and transfers sometimes taking 1-2 days to show so i went to blockchain.info and manually typed my address in there.

https://blockchain.info/address/1BdGu4xJnzcnoDtKTske3rrMhbb67c3n7N

That is the address in question. SO i see 2.2 btc transfered to it then very soon the same ammount getting transfered to a 3rd party address which i don't recognise. So i go into my receiving addresses tab in my multibit client to search for that address.

To my shock it's GONE. I don't even have the option to delete any of my receiving addresses so I could not have deleted it even if I wanted to. Also, the client stayed open all this time (From time i paste untill i saw the blockchain show the funds get to it), so no blockchain resets, crashes or anything like that. It simply vanioshed like WTF seriously Sad

I went thru 30 different wallet-backup file's, all the way from 2013 and did not find that receiving address in any.

Can a receiving address simply dissapear? I am baffled Sad 800$ down the drain i cannot believe it. I cannot sleep

I am scared to request another bitcoin payment from another client now.

It looks like the problem was probably copy and paste error. You may have accidentally copied an address for the addresses you have sent to before, not one of your receiving addresses. You may have also actually not copied the address and had pasted an address that was already in your clipboard. Either way, see if you can figure out who owns that address. Then try contacting them and see if they will send you the Bitcoin back.

Also, this has nothing to do with Multibit.

Another thing that could have happened is that you have a virus on your computer which will replace the address in your clipboard with one that looks similar but is actually controlled by a hacker. You should immediately scan your computer for viruses. Then check all of your receiving addresses for any address that might look similar to the address the Bitcoin sent to.

Just because you fucked up doesn't mean that bitcoin is broken, you just weren't careful. The point of bitcoin is that you are in control of your own money, you are your or web bank, do you must be careful and double check everything.

Hey your shit together and come back when you are calm. We are only trying to help here.
