Its fear of the unknown, mathematics, cryptography, programming, networking these are all fairly difficult skills too master, not to mention you need to understand fiat money and how all productivity is created by people accepting that most of the upper government and wealthy people are purely printing their wealth and ordering other people around through agencies including military and police force.

Now the reason why its mainstream though people love to pretend to have never heard about it is because the intelligence its requires to understand, makes them produce a subconscious psychological block, its protection for them since they are already getting fed and clothed by the fiat system, and as the fiat system crumbles
their subconscious will release the block and hopefully they will enter a more safer environment as crypto should be more accessible and easily used ie government acceptance and supply.

I think the number of people that have NEVER heard of Bitcoin is still way too high to apply your theory of the subconsciousness mind. I very much like the idea of this block on people's mind that will get part of the "last active chain" in the future once fiat starts crumbling but, like I said before, I think a lot of people out there haven't even heard it yet any shape or form. It is growing tho, the Economist did really help to bring it out there. But we are still the early adopters.

I agree that some people might not talk about it much due to fear of response from people that don't know about it or do know about it and think it's "crazy talk".

But I also notice that while people may know the world "Bitcoin" most/man/a lot of people don't care to know what it is, or want  to use it or are even curious. This is why it'll never be a #1 global currency or take over the Dollar or some such thing. Because know Government or institution is ever going to be able  to mandate its use (and no Government is going to just cancel their fiat and say "use whatever you want")

The  key to adoption is really having stores accept it AND have signs around that say "Bitcoin Accepted Here".  Do that and people  will  wonder what they're missing  out on.

We are advocating a smooth transition from the fiat system and if we wanted to cause chaos we already could have, what we do want is to be at the forefront of a new currency system and that's what we are doing. A bit of upheaval is unavoidable though i think the way we have managed it as a group so far has been extremely professional all things considered. To top it off I think we are responsible for a stable global economy at the moment and you have to have faith in humanity and all things to know that what you have done will be rewarded.

I think we are still far far away from the mainstream. Most of the articles in newspapers had been in the financial or sometimes in the technology/future section. But I never saw Bitcoin on the front page except Newsweek (the face of Bitcoin) and the economist.
So my guess is that certain people with certain jobs have heart and read about Bitcoin.Mostly the financial sector.
But not the mainstream in general. I have many friends with jobs like dentist, lawyer, mechanic, chef, teacher, engineers, etc. 80% had no clue about Bitcoin until I told them.
Still a long long way to go. But we will make it.

Hmmm, I have doubt about Bitcoin being mainstream these days; I live in a very wealthy country where if you don't have access to the internet, you're considered dead. Phenomena like Twitter and Facebook are just as common as water and air, and we have one of the highest concentrations of EV's driving on our roads. Yet (and I've said it before), 99% of the public still seems unaware or uninterested in crypto, generally being brushed off as a strange internet curiosity.

More organizations however are accepting Bitcoin as a form of payment, but they still form a rather miniscule minority. It has yet to be seen if crypto really gains a foothold in 'normal' life or remains a niche on the WWW.

its only mainstream when a certain percentage of the population uses it.

its only used by a certain percentage of the population when there is common goods and services for them

when there is common goods and services for them is when you can get paid a wage in it and buy toilet roll, baked beans and a new pair of underwear.

...

in short
its only mainstream when you can get paid a wage in it and buy toilet roll, baked beans and a new pair of underwear.

I honestly beleive your average jo-schmoe is likely to inept at thiought to actually use BTC..

Its sad really, I think without our lifetimes we will see BTC fail and something else replace it likely.
Of course this is all speculation.. BTC is about as mainstream as its going to get until it becomes idiot proof imho.

How can we be mainstream when there is only about 1M users in the world, maybe at best 2M if we wanna be generous! I would call this far away from mainstream.

Now Facebook is mainstream, YouTube as well but Bitcoin still has a long way to go to get there. I am not saying that we need a number of users like services I have mentioned above, but we need much more people to use Bitcoin than it's the case at the moment!

I had heard of Bitcoin through the news before I learned about it. Initially I heard it was internet nerd money, and skipped any boring explanations of how it worked. It took quite an effort to learn about mining, blocks, confirmations, etc. A significant proportion of the population have probably heard of Bitcoin, but don't understand how it works, and have never considered using it yet. With new use cases they could start to use it, but it will take time.

Yeah but most of it is still confined within the constraints of the technological geek world and some of the economical world as well. Mainstream is twitter, instagram etc... the average joe still got no idea on Bitcoin.
