Taipei (CNN)Taiwan has elected its first female president in a landmark election that could unsettle relations with Beijing.

Tsai Ing-wen, leader of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), won the presidency with 56.1% of the vote, the official Central News Agency said, after eight years under the government of the pro-China Kuomintang (KMT) or Nationalist Party.

As a Chinese, I would consider this as a democratic experimentation success in Chinese-speaking world.

Congratulations!!! That means that Taiwan, as a nation will be extinct in a few decades time. The Germans made the same mistake. And they are on their way towards self-extermination. None of the countries which have elected female heads of state have fared well.... Sweden, Norway, Bangladesh, Argentina, Thailand... the list is very long.

Couldn't tell whether you're right or not, people are trend to elect the best leader. Anyway if she didn't work well she will leave office four year later. I don't think it will make a country extinct.

Any way, female Presidents also have some qualities for this position, not just male Presidents.
In my country we also just got first female President and we are content with her work.
Congratulation Taiwan and wish all the best to your country and to your new President!

And how many of them managed to utilize the opportunity for the betterment of their countries? Very few. The first name which comes to my mind is that of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the current president of Liberia. Her handling of the Ebola outbreak was horrendous. She ignored the epidemic in the beginning, and it cost Liberia thousands of lives, and billions of USD in economic damage.

Strongly disagree with this one. I'm against all type of sexist thoughts. The person's qualifications is important, not their sex, race, ethnicity, eye color or other congenitally specifications.

Now, the netizens from China mainland are very upset that Tsai had been saying Taiwan is a country.

Do you think if Taiwan is a country or not? Share your minds.

It is definitely Taiwan is a country. The presidential election that chose a woman as president is a progress, today no longer see the gender gap, which has the ability he has a right to lead. And this is different from the China mainland is still questioning such things.

Yes, I'm agree with you (ACAB). The ability of a person cann't be measured on gender but rather to how he was able to contribute positively to the surrounding areas.

Taiwan should be considered as a country, but first they should replace their official name as "Republic of Taiwan" from the current name as "Republic of China". Secondly, they should make Taiwanese as the official language, along with recognizing Hakka, Min Dong and Puxian as regional languages. Mandarin can remain co-official. Also, the two dozen or so aboriginal languages (such as Atayal and Kanakanabu) should be given protected status.

Most other countries consider Taiwan to be a separate country.
The only confusion comes when we see a Chinese-Taipei sports team.  Smiley

Taiwan is a country, not a separate state. Which considers Taiwan as a separate country is mainland china.

In any sport where teams taiwan appear it will be referred to as Chinese Taipei, so I think clearly between Taiwan with mainland China.

Taiwan has its own official language ie Mandarin, unlike mandarin Taiwan with mainland China lies in the writing, the writing on the Chinese mainland mandarin is more simple, while the writing on the taiwan mandarin is complete.

Regarding the local language, each country has a regional language as well as Taiwan and the Chinese mainland. So for what to protected, desirable is preserved.
