newbie question: I installed Bitcoin but it doesn't run

I installed Bitcoin and it set up successfully and went through the whole Wizard setup thing just fine, but I can't run the application. When I click on the icon the little spinning circle comes up, but then it goes away and the application doesn't run. How can I fix this and make it work?
