title. can you guys explain how to mine cryptocurrency?

There are plenty of different types of crypto out there and many need certain types of hardware in order to mine.
Mining BTC with a laptop is dead and gone now with the advent of ASIC technology. Although there are still plenty of GPU and CPU mineable coins.
I would suggest maybe taking a look at an exchange and seeing what has a good price before you go and waste electricity on mining.
If you are interested in BTC mining I would maybe reconsider. It's very hot and noisey and the payouts arent that great when you factor in electricity.

If you are really super new i would advise poking around this forum section here first.
Beginners & Help
That should prime you a bit for things we will generally expect you to know around this section.
Check out other sub-forums too..
There is one on mining and service discussion etc.

YOU need to do your own homework.

FUD first & ask questions later™

And: do not invest in anything (except Bitcoin) for a while....do lots of research first.

Don't want to scare you off, but crypto is still the Wild West, and there are some bad guys around. You have to protect yourself. No-one else will. Cool

So get researching:

tl;dr to the above: The most common frauds are so-called high-yield investment programs. Avoid any and all 'investments' that promise a 'high-yield', no matter how glib the rationale. Another tip-off is a promised guarantee of value: if you see a promise that 'guarantees' $X for an alt, run away.

----------

Since you're interested in mining, watch out for new-miner frauds. To protect yourself, only buy mining ASICs/equipment that already exist and can be shipped out as soon as you place your order. Leave the "pre-order" arms race to folks who've been around the block and/or are rich enough to absorb any losses from scammers.

If you want to get rich quick and are currently "down on your luck," tread carefully. I had to learn this one the hard way: the toxic combo of having little money and seeing other folks getting rich will leave you psychologically vulnerable to a lot of scams. If you feel obliged to play "catch-up," try doing nothing that costs any money until you work through that vulnerability. It'll help a lot if you're patient with yourself. You actually have a lot of time: a recent Coindesk article predicted that blockchain fintech won't be mainstreamed for a decade. That timeframe gives you a lot of leeway for taking it slow.

You'll save yourself a lot of time and effort if you stick to one alt. Another one I had to learn the hard way. There's a heckuva lot going on here, and trying to keep up with it all can easily consume most of your day - sometimes all of your day. It's seductively easy to become a Bitcointalk forum junkie. In addition to avoiding forum-junkiehood, sticking to one alt is good time management. It'll give you the time to acquire the technical skills to figure out what goes on "under the hood." Having those skills will win you a lot of respect around here.

I managed to calm myself down a lot by seeing altcoins as essentially a fun and exciting hobby with potential to change the world. This attitude enabled me to flush the "get-rich-quick-itis" out of my system.

Also, RUN.

Get out of the altcoin section if you're a newbie.  Buy some Bitcoin and leave it at that.

Seriously, for your own sake.

Lol, I strongly second this.  Don't make deals with anyone here on this forum unless you're ready for your wallet to get an atomic wedgie.  Don't listen to anyone here until you've learned who's who and even then, very little around here is what it appears to be.

My understanding is that mining nowadays is pretty much for the big boys and those folks who can get extremely cheap electricity.  Like the man said, just buy some coin from a safe place and don't try any of the other stuff.

Don't listen to anyone on this forum including those who are telling you to "leave the altcoin section" and "just buy bitcoin".  If you want to profit, you must do your own research and make your own decisions.  Playing it safe isn't about not taking risks, but taking calculated risks.  Imo, there are still good things in the altcoin section.  Reading everybody else's responses confirms my opinion that the people drawn to this forum have changed.  This is the unrestricted free market.  This is unbridled capitalism with no bailouts for the poor or rich.  You become the sum of your decisions be that good or bad.  This is the original ideology of crypto.  Of course there are scams and bad investments, but those come with the territory and you must choose to the best of your ability.  That is what separates the wheat from the chaff.  Good luck.
