Hi
I created a bitcoin wallet once to pay for a service from a site, but i never bought the service and kept the bitcoins. I also very shortly did some mining.
And i changed OS a few times since so i have no files what so ever form then.
So if i don't have a wallet.dat file i have lost that wallet for good ?

Sorry to say but given your story the Bitcoin are most likely gone forever. To be sure please explain exactly what you mean when you say "I created a bitcoin wallet" - be very specific with as much detail as possible.

Our family was terrorized by Homeland Security. Read all about it here: http://www.jmwagner.com/ and http://www.burtw.com/ Any donations to help us recover from the $300,000 in legal fees and forced donations to the Federal Asset Forfeiture slush fund are greatly appreciated!

Most likely, yes... If it was bitcoin core, you never took a backup (of your wallet.dat or your private keys) and you reinstalled your OS a couple of times, chances are close to 0 that you'll be able to recover your coins... Sorry If it was a huge amount of coins, you might want to shutdown your pc asap, and try a file recovery tool like these ones: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/filerecovery/tp/free-file-recovery-programs.htmChances of success are close to 0 tough.

If you used a pass phrase to create the wallet your private key might still be recoverable.

Which was your btc wallet address and how much did you loose there ? Can you enlist your wallet address you lost ? We could try searching on blockchain if still it exists or you should contact the service center of the client you used dear.

Firstly a btc address will always exist, there is no way to delete it. Contacting support of the client will not help in any way since they can (not in ANY way) recover a lost wallet.dat file or a private key.

However, sometimes you forget or misplace your wallet password. This is a bad thing Unless the password is recovered, you have no way to access any Bitcoin or alt-coin funds stored in that wallet. That money is lost forever. At today's exchange rate, that might be a lot of money and your wallet.dat has a key that allows you to use your bitcoins. Without that key, your bitcoins will never be able to be accessed. They will never be put back in a newly minted block because the system won't ever know that the coins are lost. So take special care of your Bitcoin wallet because if you lose it your coins are gone forever

You have no way to recover your wallet now since wallet.dat is the main and primary base of your wallet which you lost. Next time take care of your wallet and i recommend you to use other online wallet services from blockchain or xapo or coinbase atleast if u have the private key you cannot loose your wallet in any way !

it all happens if you have installed hardware wallet, then you cannot recover it if you have forgotten you seed key or wallet.dat file, but if you have stored in online web wallet then if it is still exist then i think you can recover it.

What does a hardware wallet has to do with it? He had a software wallet, not a hardware wallet. If he had a hardware wallet he would still have his bitcoins.

But be careful not to mix up different versions of the wallet.dat file. Backup wallet.dat frequently, and never delete any of these backup files even if you think it is empty or outdated. You may want to retrace your activities at a later stage
