Don't know how much you've tuned what you've already got here but the first couple of suggestions are supposed to help significantly. Some simple and good ones, some that wouldn't work too well here.

Converting DB tables to InnoDB will help tremendously, especially under load. Warning: Converting the messages table will take hours. If it's 5 GB, that is. I have a feeling that it is much bigger, such as 7 - 12 GB.
