AMSTERDAM - Online wisseldienst Bitcoin-Central mag zich als eerste verhandelpunt voor bitcoins in Europa een bank noemen.
Dat meldt het Bitcoin forum. Bitcoin-Central heeft de bankstatus kunnen bereiken dankzij een overeenkomst met de Franse financiële dienstverleners Aqoba en Credit Mutuel.
De dienst heeft in Europa het stempel Payment Services Provider, mag betaalpassen uitgeven en heeft een IBAN.
In de nieuwe situatie moet het makkelijker zijn om transacties van en naar andere banken te laten lopen, daarbij gebruik makend van gangbare valuta als euro's. Ook zijn gebruikers nu beter beschermd wanneer de betaaldienst in de problemen zou komen, en kunnen voor eventueel geldverlies worden gecompenseerd.

Bitcoin is een anonieme, gecodeerde valuta die in de afgelopen jaren vooral berucht werd omdat hij vaak wordt gebruikt voor illegale aankopen op internet. De waarde van bitcoins schommelde de afgelopen jaren soms flink. Op het moment is 1 bitcoin ongeveer 10,50 euro waard.
