His 1981 paper, "Untraceable Electronic Mail, Return Addresses, and Digital Pseudonyms", laid the groundwork for the field of anonymous communications research. For example the predecessor of TOR: Mix networks), through his companies DigiCash (anonymous transactions) and ecash (anonymous electronic cash system), which used cryptography to anonymise electronic money transactions.

"More than hundred years ago Berlage wrote a letter to his brother while building the stock exchange. Berlage was a socialist and wrote: "I realise that this is the most capitalistic building of Amsterdam, but when the economy collapses this exchange will be a people's palace. A place where meetings, sharing knowledge and working together are central".
