On New Year’s Eve, photographer Joel Goodman captured drunk revelers falling over on a Manchester street. Nothing out of the ordinary in England – except that people are comparing the photo to Renaissance art!
The image depicts a drunk man being arrested by the police, another man lying down on the ground with his beer, a woman crossing the street and looking straight at the camera, and a crowd nearby watching it all unfold.
The internet’s saying it adheres to the ‘golden ratio’ due to its perfect composition. Others are citing parallels to classical works like Michelangelo’s The Creation of Adam.
In an interview with the Manchester Evening News, Goodman explains that many find the photo appealing because of the subject matter.
‘There are plenty of photographs published that show people having a great time. It’s much safer and easier photographing happy, willing people posing than photographing angry, drunk people candid’, he said. ‘That’s not a criticism of the former, but it’s one reason why the latter might stand out’.
Goodman’s masterpiece reached Twitter fame through BBC producer Roland Hughes’ account, where the photo has already gotten more than 28,700 retweets and 29,700 likes. Don’t be surprised if you find this at a museum any time soon!
