Hey all, I am wanting to build a gpu mining rig with an old pc I'm going to pick up. It's more for a little project and maybe some profitability down the road...one issue,

I don't really know what video card, mother board, power box ect.. I would need. Help me out?!

As well, what would be a good coin to mine? I was thinking ethereum while it's on pow and it would be cool to download te block chain but what else is there to look in to? I'm going to be doing my research but welcome all and any advise!!

The most important components is the graphics card. It depends on what you wan to mine. If you want to mine Ethereum, you need the 7970 or 280x to mine most efficiently.

From the cheapest...

- If you want to go super cheap use what you already have. You can mine with any 64 bit CPU.

- If the PC already has a GPU you may be able to use it.

- You can buy a GPU that fits the existing power supply

- buy a new GPU and PSU to match it

etc

Okay, thanks for the advise so far! I see I have alot to learn about the technology yet. I'm very new to cryptocurrencies and I really see it as being something that by jumping on now could be worth it in the future.

One other question, is gpu mining going to be around for a while? I know with bitcoin and some other cryptos Asic miners get built and take over the gpu's, but are some cryptos being made like ethereum to help the lone gpu miner?!

GPU mining should be around for a long time. The alt algos are designed to make it more difficult to
build an asic. There are many different algos and each one needs ts own asic to mine. And finally
there has to be enough demand for it to be profatible.

The Ethereum mining will last about 10 months. If we cannot make ROI in 10 months, we should not buy more GPU.

Do you know any other coins have the similar potential?

You only need 40 days. A r9 280 is making $3.5 a day...

So you think the price will not drop in 40 days or the difficulty will not catch up in the period?

Don't think in such short terms, especially if you're buying new equipment.
When ETH melts there will be another  coin to mine.

There was no profitable coin to mine for over a year before Ethereum for most European miners.

It is better to be cautious.
