I was scammed on this thread https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1325618.msg13590577#msg13590577 which was locked.

This thread looks suspiciously simular https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1347934.0 which is also locked.

I understand there is a feedback system but it's only effective after someone gets scammed. I don't see a good reason to allow a normal user to lock topics. User input and sellers reactions may prevent a lot of scams.

I said this already many times but they wont change it .. i also posted about the locked threads in here before. As a general rule, never ever deal with any newbies on locked threads.

Its not only that, but its simply too easy for them to scam around here cause people usually act after being scammed and even defend potential scammers cause they have no "screenshots" .. but in the end, basically all accusations become true and looking at the history of this board especially, or lets say, just a 6 months period ... how many of the accused turned out to be true and im guessing way over 50% (how many times u see a it was a "misunderstanding" ?) , so this way of thinking to prevent scammers doesnt  work for me - it encourages more to come.

Fuck the signature - if you are so desperate for money why dont you go and get a fucking job first - once you did that, perhaps you will think twice what kind of shit you want to be affiliated with.

I'm not really sure what to say to this, to be honest, but I'll try saying it.

This isn't going to happen, period. Sorry, but it's a forum and other people have plenty of reasons to lock threads - for example, if spammers are spamming a thread to oblivion and it's the kind of posts that can't really be deleted... locked. If a product seller ran out of stock but ignorant customers continue to ask and beg to resupply... locked. If the owner doesn't want people to respond to the thread... locked. Etc.

A locked thread usually means the topic is done with. When talking about sales, locked threads should mean the seller either doesn't sell anymore or the goods got sold already.
If you want to be on the safe side, don't buy anything if the sale thread is locked. Easy solution.
No need to remove a feature that got it's use over this.

Gift cards are obviously stolen and you didn't use escrow and you now want to disable thread locking.   Yeah, good luck.  You're going to need it.

Something should happen - once the software is able to customize more features. For example, its not supposed to limit some "freedom" as you would imply by saying "its a forum" but given the amount of scams and attempts, why not set a real serious trust system, which would be similar to the signature rules.

Why are "newbies" with zero postings allowed to lock threads and self moderate topics but for their signature or posting/pm rights they need to "verify" themselves by activity. For me its like a loophole they are abusing - at least make it more difficult for them. If there is already an order in place set by activity and trust for such things, why allow newbies from the start to self moderate? Thats something you wont find on "any forum".

The idea is not to limit the board, but to adapt some rules that make more sense regarding especially financial offers. Most here are because they are supporting Bitcoin and often post themselves to warn others of paypal etc, so I dont see why someone would be opposed and especially real "newbies" coming here should be having the same interest in safety and im sure they would understand and support it, for their own good.

How many real newbies come on here with broken english "have 88$ pp, need btc.. no trust u first blabla" and lock the thread?

Don't trade with newbies then. And as an additional rule, do never ever trade with newbies if they are going to do their part in the trade via a reversible payment option.
Oh, and besides the warning in PMs (which is there because of impersonators), newbies aren't limited in PMs more than the 5 minutes cooldown they also have for every post they want to make.

Of course, im saying the same, avoid any trades in such way with newbies but this is supposed to be a protection for future real newbies that most likely will see 2-3 scammers every time on the first page without realizing.

The second part is exactly what I mean - they are limited by the 5 minutes cooldown and this already forced them to switch to skype and made them easier to expose, so whats wrong with the same logic used on locked threads and self moderation. Why not allow after a certain activity.. its a small step, but wont hurt anyone apart the scammers.

If you think a post is a spam, then report it with a valid reason and it will be reviewed by a mod and i it fits to the mods' definition of spam then it will be deleted. Also moderators does ban people with sig campaigns who posts such low quality posts. They do they work but it also requires the help of other members here, that is why there is a report to moderator option in every post.
Scam is not moderated here so you just gotta be more careful i dealing with people. Now for that locking thread or markig the thread sold.  As a person, If I saw a locked thread the I will consider it as not active anymore. The thread doesn't neccessarily need to be marked sold. It's just plain common sense. Why would you attempt to buy in a thread that is not active anymore?

I'm with you about not having the permission to lock threads for the regular users, most of the forums as far as I know don't give a thread lock permissions for regular members. And so only those who have valid reason has the right to reply to old threads (which i think can be considered locked). those who bumps for th epurpose of spaming get to be banned.

What you can however do Chris, is try creating a new thread pointing to the scammer. i doubt he'd be back to respond though. you cant get your btc back but then you get to warned users about the scammer.

Here is an example of a thread that was locked
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1349779.0

It was a suggestion by me to try to cut down unpopulated blocks. Shorena pointed out why its implementation would be counter productive, and there seemed little reason to clutter the board with a "red herring" thread about the blocksize. I think that users should be able to lock such threads if they feel that discussion in them is no longer productive.
